In the study, participants rode a stationary bike for 20 minutes. After the session, researchers detected a burst of high frequency brain waves called ripples. These originated in the hippocampus, a key area for memory, and then spread to other regions linked with learning.
Michelle Voss, the studyโs lead author, said the findings show that even a single bout of exercise can rapidly alter neural rhythms and brain networks important for memory and cognitive function. This adds to growing evidence that physical activity not only benefits the body but also has immediate effects on the brainโs learning systems.
