Apparently my 9 to 5 is looking in mouths and asking people how they sleep. 😂

But that’s because the mouth can give us so many clues about breathing, sleep, tongue posture, grinding, and overall oral function.

It’s never just about the tongue.

If something feels off with your sleep or your child’s, reach out… sometimes the clues are hiding in plain sight.

One of the biggest goals in myofunctional therapy is making proper tongue rest posture feel automatic.

This client started with easier tactile targets, like a sunflower seed, or a dry grain of rice… and gradually worked her way up to more challenging tasks that required greater tongue awareness, precision, and control.

The exercise itself isn’t the goal.

A tongue that naturally rests in the right place is. 👅

And because small objects can be a choking risk, these types of exercises should only be done with specific professional guidance. This girl worked really hard to get to this!

Everyone wants the tongue exercises 👅

But if we’re talking about better breathing, we can’t ignore the nose.

Allergies, congestion, snoring, and mouth breathing can all affect how easy nasal breathing feels…
and sometimes clearing and supporting the nose has to come first.

Myofunctional therapy is about more than the tongue. It’s about the whole breathing + oral function picture.

If you’re struggling with mouth breathing or snoring, reach out and let’s figure out what may be getting in the way.

Your tongue shouldn’t lead every bite or sip.

Good oral function means better control and less compensation.

If you notice your tongue reaching forward when you eat or drink — or you’re seeing this in your child — DM me or book a call and we can talk about what may be going on.

We teach our kids how to talk, chew, brush their teeth, and tie their shoes…

But never how to breathe!

If your child is mouth breathing, don’t just focus on getting the lips closed. Ask why they’re using BACKUP BREATHING in the first place.

The goal is comfortable nasal breathing whenever possible.

Follow for more on breathing, sleep & oral function — or reach out if you want help figuring out what may be contributing.

A favorite kind of update — two months after finishing therapy:

✔️ No more snoring
✔️ Tongue still resting in the right spot

Progress matters, but so does making sure it lasts.

That’s why I follow up after treatment ends — and if anything shifts later, my clients always know they can reach out. 💙

A release can create new mobility… but the goal is what the tongue can actually do with that new freedom.

This is the before… and the healed result. 👅

Better elevation. Better range. More opportunity for functional movement.

And this is why therapy around a release matters: anatomy can change quickly, but function still needs to be trained.

Mouth open. Snoring. Drooling. Teeth grinding. Restless sleep.

If several of these sound familiar, it may be worth looking at the bigger picture.

Reach out if you want help figuring out what may be contributing.

🥂 To the orthodontists who look past “straight teeth” and ask WHY they keep moving.

Tongue thrust is one of the most common - and most missed - reasons orthodontic results relapse.

A retainer can hold teeth in place, but if the muscle pattern behind the movement never gets addressed, it’s just buying time, not fixing the cause.

I love it when a provider catches this early and loops me in before relapse happens. That’s what real interdisciplinary care looks like!

Parents, had you heard of “tongue thrust” before this?

Here’s the hard truth:

tonsils this large can sometimes cause zero symptoms… and that’s exactly why size alone shouldn’t be the only thing we base a decision on.

When I’m assessing a child, I’m not just looking at how big the tonsils are.
I’m looking at the full picture: quality of sleep, breathing patterns, heavy breathing, gasping… how they’re actually functioning, not just what’s visible.

Big tonsils don’t automatically mean there’s a problem, and normal-looking tonsils don’t automatically mean there isn’t one. Symptoms are what tell the real story.

If any of this sounds familiar, reach out. Many parents find my evaluation helpful in putting it all together… DM me or book a free call. 💙
