Patient Innovation is a nonprofit, international, multilingual, free venue for patients and caregivers of any disease to share their innovations.

has officially kicked off!

HealthInnovAI is a Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)-funded project exploring how Generative AI can strengthen innovation capabilities in healthcare, with a particular focus on user-driven healthcare innovation. The project will look at the role AI can play in the democratization of innovation, helping lower barriers for patients and caregivers to participate more actively in innovation processes. The overall goal is to make patient innovation more visible, easier to access, and better integrated into health innovation ecosystems.

The project brings together a consortium led by Nova SBE, in partnership with NOVA Medical School - Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS and Patient Innovation

Over the next months, HealthInnovAI will attempt to:

• Mobilize user innovation in healthcare
• Empower patients and caregivers through technology and innovation capacity-building
• Influence the way patient agency is integrated into healthcare innovation, beyond the role of end-users.

This Wednesday, the by Unicorn Factory Lisboa hosted its first , bringing together startups, healthcare organizations, and industry to discuss how innovation is being implemented in practice.

The conversations focused less on vision and more on ex*****on — from how hospitals pilot new solutions, to how startups navigate adoption, and how collaboration across borders and stakeholders can actually work.

A recurring theme was the gap between developing innovation and integrating it into healthcare systems, where complexity, incentives, and timing don’t always align.

It’s encouraging to see more initiatives creating space for these more practical discussions.

At Patient Innovation, we’re proud to see our Bootcamp mentors — David Siqueira Magboulé, Salomé Azevedo, and Filipa Machado Vaz — actively contributing to initiatives that are strengthening healthcare innovation in Portugal.

🚨 PATIENT INNOVATION
After a life-threatening allergic reaction experienced by her young son, Barcelona-based nurse Pilar Moreno Carrillo created HERIX: a silicone bracelet designed to help children with severe allergies stay safe wherever they are.
Combining simple allergen icons with a QR code, HERIX gives instant access to clear instructions on how to recognize an emergency and respond quickly. In critical moments, teachers, caregivers, or bystanders can scan the code and get step-by-step guidance—helping them act with confidence when every second matters.
What began as a mother’s response to fear has grown into a practical, non-intrusive solution that empowers communities, improves emergency response, and helps protect children beyond clinical settings.

Today marks the end of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s mandate.

From the early days of Patient Innovation, when the project was still largely unknown and taking its first steps, President Marcelo showed meaningful support for our initiative. His presence and recognition in those initial moments helped bring visibility to the importance of solutions developed by patients.

As his mandate comes to an end, Patient Innovation would like to express its sincere appreciation for the attention and recognition he gave to our project over the years.

Twelve years ago, on 7 February 2014, a group of researchers from different fields (from innovation management to medicine) came together around a shared conviction they realized in their joint research: that patients and informal caregivers are often capable of developing innovative solutions to help them cope with their health conditions, and that, if shared, these solutions could improve the lives of many others facing similar challenges.

That belief led to the launch of Patient Innovation and to a journey shaped by collaboration across communities that do not always naturally intersect. Over time, it has become increasingly clear how much can emerge when lived experience connects with research, clinical practice, industry, and policy, as a shared ecosystem.

The project also led to the creation of several initiatives, including the PI Platform, the PI Bootcamp, the PI Awards, as well as numerous research papers published in both management and medical journals.

A sincere thank you to the people and academic institutions (Nova SBE, NOVA Medical School - Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Copenhagen Business School, and many sponsors (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, CMU Portugal, EIT Health) who made this possible from the very beginning, and to everyone who has contributed along the way. After caring for their grandmother, Anurag Ram Chandran and Ayush Agrawal created Kubo Care: a contact-free monitoring system that helps older adults live safely at home while preserving privacy. Using discreet radar-based sensors (no cameras, microphones, or wearables), it detects falls, tracks daily activity patterns, and alerts families or caregivers to important changes, supporting earlier, more informed care without being intrusive.
