You didn't forget what you were looking for.
You forgot who you were in the other room.
You cross a threshold and the intention vanishes.
This is what Lacan calls the effect of the signifying cut.
The doorway functions as a bar. On one side, you were a subject organized by a desire: "I will go get X". On the other side, the Symbolic reconfigures itself. New room, new scene, new Other.
The unconscious shows you the truth: desire is not inside you. It is sustained by the place you were in.

The fridge isn’t the problem. Desire doesn’t disappear just because we check again.
Lacan might say: the point isn’t to get everything you want — but to know what to do with the fact that you don’t.

When attention wanders, the brain shifts into the default mode network—we become decoupled from the present and absorbed in memory, fantasy or thought.
Lacanianly, the interesting point is that we don’t entirely choose where the mind goes. Something pulls our attention—and perhaps reveals where our desire is already at work

Looking for a house number? Turn down the music. The brain’s little reminder: when everything speaks at once, nothing gets heard.

We don’t always read prices mathematically—we read them psychologically. 👀
19.99€ feels closer to 10€ than 20€ because the first digit anchors our perception before the rest of the number fully registers. That tiny shift in perception can make a surprisingly big difference in what we’re willing to buy.
The price is 19.99. The mind hears: “one-nine…”

The eclipse does not simply make the light disappear. It reveals that what we call “light” was never simply there: it was constituted by an absence, by the possibility of its being obscured.
Desire works in much the same way. It is not sustained by the object we possess, but by the lack that makes the object desirable. The eclipse stages this lack before our eyes: the object is still there, yet something comes between us and it, producing a gap — and in that gap, desire appears.

The Bandwagon Effect 🎢
You see a long line outside a restaurant and suddenly think: It must be good.
But perhaps what you’re really following isn’t the object — it’s the desire of the others.
Lacan might remind us: sometimes we desire not the thing itself, but what we imagine the Other desires.
So before joining the queue, ask yourself:
Do I want it — or do I want what everyone else seems to want?

The IKEA effect reminds us that value is never simply in the object itself. We love what bears the mark of our own desire. In Lacanian terms, it is our investment of jouissance that transforms an ordinary shelf or knitted sweater into something irreplaceable. Others see wood or wool; you see a piece of yourself.

Emotions spread faster than facts. Spend enough time around fear, anger, or anxiety, and your nervous system begins to echo what surrounds it. The same is true for calm, joy, and confidence.
Lacan reminds us that the subject is never isolated—we are always caught in the desire and affect of the Other. What we feel is not always entirely our own.
Choose your environment wisely. It shapes you long before you become aware of it.

You buy a red Mini Cooper, and suddenly it seems as though every other car on the road is a red Mini.
You learn the word apophenia, and within days you encounter it in books, podcasts, and conversations.
You hear about a psychological concept such as the Baader–Meinhof effect, and then notice it repeatedly everywhere....
