A book celebrating the beauty, character and stories of traditional Portuguese family homes that still resist the passing of time.
Through photography, it preserves the memory of a disappearing heritage, honouring the Portuguese savoir-faire, taste and identity that make these houses so special.
A tribute to the homes that tell our story, and to the importance of keeping their legacy alive.

“Madeira: Recipes & Wanderings on the Atlantic Island of Eternal Spring is the fifth volume in our cookbook series developed in partnership with Belmond, after Liguria, Penang, Campania, and El Bajío, offering an exclusive window into culinary communities around the world. This latest installment travels to the Atlantic island of Madeira off north-western Africa, where Nadine Ijewere’s film photography captures the splendours of its culinary world and the contours of its nature, interwoven with interludes by writer Inês Matos Andrade, who takes the reader on an unhurried walk through Madeiran cuisine—its tricks, trades, and influences—while winding and wandering through the poetic communities that make up the island. At its heart are 21 dishes drawn from the kitchens of Reid’s Palace, Belmond’s legendary clifftop hotel in Funchal, alongside guest contributions from Violet Bakery’s Claire Ptak, food and travel writer Rafael Tonon, and chef Nuno Mendes, who also introduces the book, honouring its ecosystem of flavours echoing continents beyond its shores. Sweet, fiery, untamed, just like its liquid treasures, Madeira invites you to roam the island and let it show you its secrets: ‘Whatever your idea of paradise may be, one thing is certain: Here, it comes to sins, there is no shortage of fruit ready to be bitten’.”

Waste. A Reader About the Global Routes of Rubbish

“What does waste have to tell us about our world? In what ways are the global economy and the production and recycling of waste connected? Who profits from waste, and who is harmed by it? And what utopian ideas can waste engender? The Global North generates huge quantities of personal and industrial waste, yet the bulk of it ends up in the Global South, where waste is reused, processed further, or simply dumped. As a result, waste—along with the onward trajectory it follow —remains out of the public eye in the places it is created. Published in conjunction with the exhibition Waste, the reader delves into its themes with interdisciplinary essays by scientists and artists, examples of best practice, and reflections on the show and the process of developing it with the exhibition’s critical friends.”

“Acts of Appearance assumed its form within a village of Adivasi papier-mâché artists from the Kokna and Warli tribes in Palghar district. Further inland from Dahanu, it is one of the most impoverished districts in Maharashtra, India. Gill’s collaborator-subjects are renowned for their papier-mâché objects, including traditional sacred masks made for the yearly Bohada procession. In these pictures the artists as well as other local volunteers engage in everyday village activities while wearing new masks, made by them expressly for this body of work beginning in 2015. The new creations depict living beings with the physical characteristics of ordinary humans, commonplace animals, or valued objects. A range of scenarios and narratives, situated in both “reality” and dreamlike states, come together in the photographs, which simultaneously portray symbolic or playful representations as well as the familiar experiences of community members against the backdrop of their home and culture.”

“First presented on CD in 2005 under Vainio’s Ø alias, ‘Kantamoinen’ became something of a sleeper gem, cultishly adored for its concerted embrace of extended melody and narrative tone within an ambient context, which made it stand out from his preceding decade of ascetic noise brutalism and minimal techno.”
