Anxiety is not a behavior we need to correct.
Fear is an emotion. If we would treat humans like we do with dogs, we would be bashed for it.

A friend of your is afraid of heights, yet you both have to pass a bridge. Which variety would work best you think?

A. You tell your friend she shouldn't be afraid and then drag her on the bridge and tell her "see, what are you afraid for?"
B. You ask her what she needs or say "shall I hold your hand while we go together?" You gently give a piece of your confidence and give her time to convince herself it will work.

Would you do A or B when it is about your dog?

Dog reactive dog

With permission of the owner I'm sharing a video with you once again to explain a bit about our way of training. A lot of people think that you need to "dominate" your dog when showing reactivity.

What we trespass if we would "just correct" the barking behavior is that the dog basically tries to communicate. They say "I don't know what I have to do". Besides, before they react, they already show signs of insecurity. Guide them by positive reinforcement and you'll experience a different reaction.

At first, you see Labradoodle Indy walking with a free roaming dog without owner and she's eventually all fine. Then, we catch up a pack of dogs behind the fence. By increasing distance when Indy starts building up tension and rewarding everything she's doing well, Indy happily follows her owner and starts sniffing, takes treats and doesn't react further on, despite the dogs at the fence are still barking at her.

Then, you see 2 videos in where the owner continues to to practice positive reinforcement on the right behavior.

All this is part of the BET technique; Body language (read your dog and show guidance) Energy (always remain calm) and Timing (reward all that is going well). As a result, your dog will be thankful and happily join you in your walking adventure.

Thank you so much Nikki for the permission to share this video and show others how amazing Indy is! 👏 a job well done for sure 🥰

The danger of social media training videos

The last couple of years, videos about dogs getting trained have been running all over social media. On itself, it doesn't have to be bad. There are many good qualified trainers that have the knowledge and skills to moderate (problem) behavior.

It becomes problematic when a trainer has gained his skills by watching videos and creates methods without any solid background or education. As a result, we see more and more problems in dogs appearing with owners who try their best and copycat videos from social media. Eventually, owners could reach out getting stuck in training. But then, the damage usually is already done.

Dogs have been misunderstood for a long time. In the old school (about 20/40 years ago) "dominance" in dogs was a hot topic. We needed to be "boss" otherwise the dog would dominate us. Putting a puppy on their back and hold them to "teach we are boss from a young age". When I was a child, my dog received a smack with the leash if she would point her nose in front of your knee while walking on heel. I feel so so sorry for her with what I know now. But back then, it was "how you should do it".

Nowadays there are a couple of very good professionals who expose the completely rubbish videos that appear in where dogs literally suffer abuse. Reporting it as abuse doesn't even get recognised as such, which is even more concerning. The amounts of beating up, shutting down and breaking all self esteem of dogs is actually shocking. And then we don't even talk about "funny pranks" that also damages many dogs.

I'm a big fan of the explanations of Thinking Canine as she has knowledge, as well as social media skills to explain proper. A more funny way, but also very accurate is Shay Kelly MSc who highlights clearly the absolute nonsense ruling socials at the moment.

B.E.T. is following that same thought: you don't have to force your dog into obedience. Instead: creating a bond of unconditional trust, teaching yourself to teach your dog and understand why it is (not) working is your key to success. I'm inviting you to receive the knowledge.

With permission of the owner I would love to share a video with you and explain a bit about this beautiful boy.

Vidar is an English Staffordshire terrier male. He was raised with close supervision and strong boundaries, as his owners know the breed and took that responsibility very seriously.

Despite all the energy and effort put in, the owners reached out to me because Vidar was so stressed, pulling massively on the leash and could respond strongly to his environment.

When I met this beautiful boy, I saw an intelligent dog with a massive will to please. After explaining the B.E.T technique, I asked them to put a harness and a long leash to start training "walking without pulling" and only to focus on the behavior that was right and reward that. Besides I invited them to do the "old men walk" in where you bring your energy down and just "let it be".

Fast forward 3 months later, Vidars physical problems disappeared, he comes back when seeing a dog, he calmed down and even can walk off leash now. With the new understanding and speaking the same language, Vidar likes nothing more then to follow his owners.

I want to thank Vidars owners for their dedication, the commitment to learn to understand Vidar and their work to learn the B.E.T.

Focus on the good, not the bad. Be clear in your body language and giving space is better than taking away more and more.

Home training. A hot topic for every puppy owner. - How do you correct the indoor accidents? You don't- How do you teach...

Home training. A hot topic for every puppy owner.
- How do you correct the indoor accidents? You don't
- How do you teach them doing it outside? Simply observe what they tell you.
- Aren't you annoyed when the pup does it under your nose while they "know" to do it outside? No, because they don't do it to be naughty.

So what's the point with those little ones and how do you do it without corrections and eventually do have a home trained doggy?

First, we need to understand that a puppy can't control their bodies yet. The second they feel the need to go, they run to a (for them) suitable spot and release. If you don't recognise the "I need to go now" walk, you'll have an accident. The first days, I got caught by surprise too as I didn't know the newbe yet. Excitement about a new environment makes them showing even less signs. The split second they're not being watched can be exactly the moment of release.

And yeah, let me give you a funny s**t story in here. I thought my puppy did everything outside during the day. So all happy I went to bed in the evening, stepping fully in a fresh made 💩.
It was the furthest away from her bed. So, cleaned myself, the floor and went to bed. New Day, new chance.

The second day I noticed this puppy preferred to do her business as far away as possible. So when she starts running, I pick her up and put her outside. Praising her when she did her stuff. After some days, she started to make the connection: when I feel a p&p coming up, I need to go to the door. And there we are, the start of getting home trained.

When you know that dogs are only having full control at the age of around 6 months, it also means that you've to schedule potty moments closely. After a nap, play, food or any activity, they'll need to go. Make it a habit to put them out after every activity.

Last but not least: when there's a lot of activity, the pup can be too distracted. Then, when you come back home, they happily release in the environment of safety. That means: if you go out for a walk they could be so distracted that they'll release eventually inside. Make it a habit to come back at the potty spot after an outside walk, despite if they did something already or not.

In the end, your puppy will be as home trained as you notice their signs of needs and if you recognise it well, you'll not have accidents at all.
If you feel the need to punish because you are sick of clearing up, punish yourself, not your puppy 😅 but even better: just enjoy your puppy and accept that cleaning is part of the journey. Take a drink and reward yourself as well, before you know, the puppy will be an adult. 🥰

You don't have a "dominant puppy" when they win a game from an adult dog. The adult is educating the puppy. He teaches valuable lessons; sharing, winning, gaining confidence and physical skills will improve. Trust your adult 👌 🙂
