"The truth is that accelerating onto the highway would be a much more terrifying enterprise if we didn’t have a social contract of driving that kept mutual safety possible. The same is true for relationships. Entering into a serious relationship, and especially a marriage, means attaching your life to someone else’s. You make sacrifices based on the assumption that they will make sacrifices too. You trust that your interests are somewhere near the center of their decision-making. You build a life around that assumption."
