Since the beginning of time people have been daunted by the vastness of eternity. Ancient civilizations explored new lands in search of deeper meaning of their purpose on Earth and of the truth of their existence . Such journeys of the spirit remain dynamic in the world today. Modern day man continues pilgrimage to sacred sites in search of conscious awakening , truth, healing or enlightenment to wake the spirit within. Pilgrimage to sacred sites takes one “ from the outside to the inside “. As our world becomes smaller , we all become more responsible for the well-being of each one of us who inhabits the Earth and as well the Earth, itself. Unfortunately, for most of us, life has become busy, stressful, complicated, chaotic and the demands for our time are grater and grater. With this the natural peace and happiness of life become illusive . We disconnect ourselves consciously and spiritually from the divine creative source, the life source energy that sustains all living beings . There is no grater loss than your connection to the source. Our need to balance the soul, mind, body and to feed the heart and soul is greater than ever before . We consider ourselves to be an open and environmentally conscious traveling community. In a way we are modern day pilgrims. For years, we have travelled with BODHI to understand a place through its landscapes, its history, its people and the stories that have shaped it.

But there is another way into a place that carries all of these things at once.

Food carries memory.

A recipe can hold centuries of history. Ingredients can tell stories of trade, migration, religion, abundance or scarcity. Techniques pass from one generation to another. Some things change completely. Others remain almost untouched.

And somewhere between what a place has inherited and what it chooses to carry forward, we can understand something essential about who it is.

This autumn, we are beginning a new series of BODHI journeys built around that idea.

We want to follow the food of a region from the people who grow and make it, to the families who preserve its recipes, the cellars and traditions shaped over generations, and the chefs who are taking those same roots somewhere new.

We are creating this series together with Lidia Garofeanu , founder of More Like This , bringing together two things we care deeply about: meaningful travel and the culture that gathers around a table.

And the first story takes us south.

Galápagos makes you feel like a guest on Earth again.

Sea lions sleep on the pier while people walk gently around them. Penguins swim beside you as if your presence doesn’t matter. Flamingos stand in the afternoon light, completely unbothered. Blue-footed bo***es look almost unreal, and yet everything here feels exactly where it belongs.

Because so many species here evolved with no fear of humans, Galápagos has kept the feeling that wildlife can live beside us and still remain completely free.

Life is everywhere here. Close enough to make you hold your breath, wild enough to remind you that we are the visitors.

After only two days, Galápagos has gone far beyond what we imagined. It reminded us why we love to travel in the first place: to discover places that still have the power to surprise us, humble us, and make us feel fully alive.

We have just returned from the Amazon jungle, where we had no internet and I think we are all still processing what we experienced there.

We have just returned from the Amazon, after a few days away from signal and closer to the forest, and I think we are all still processing what we experienced there.

After the mountains, the cities and the volcanoes, the Amazon showed us another side of Ecuador: the river, the heat, the sounds of the forest, and the people who live with it every day.

We spent time with local communities, listened to stories, tasted what the land gives, learned about plants used as food and medicine.

The beauty of the Amazon is immense, but what touched us most was the human part of it: the way people receive you, the calm with which they explain their world, the relationship they have with the forest, and the feeling that life here still follows something deeper and more connected.

For our group, this became one of the most meaningful parts of Ecuador, because it brought us closer to a way of living that is simple in appearance, but rich in knowledge, presence and belonging.

This is the kind of travel we believe in at BODHI Retreats: journeys shaped around real encounters, local wisdom, and experiences that allow a place to be felt through the people who call it home.

We knew climbing Cotopaxi would be difficult.

The altitude, the cold and the wind made every step count, but looking around at that landscape made it impossible not to keep going.

We can hardly describe the feeling of this experience.

Riding horses through the vast Ecuadorian pampas, at sunset, with Cotopaxi rising in front of us, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, felt almost unreal.

Some experiences are not meant to be explained too much. You simply live them, and let them become part of you.

For us, this will remain one of the most memorable experiences of Ecuador.

And in many ways, this is the spirit of BODHI Retreats: journeys built around places, people and moments that stay with you long after you return home.

People often ask what makes a BODHI journey feel different.

The answer has never been a hotel, a destination or a longer list of highlights.

It starts much earlier.

With the route.

With the people we choose to work with.

With the time we spend getting to know a place before we ever bring a group there.

We have always believed that nature should never be something you only stop to photograph.

In Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, some of our best memories were made on the trails.

Walking through forests. National parks. Alpine lakes. Long conversations. Quiet moments.

Those hours are never a break between destinations.

They are part of the journey.

That is how we’ve always built BODHI.

Because in the end, the places are only half of the journey.
