Variety in the diet is associated with a more diverse microbiome

A very diverse population of microorganisms in the gut (digestive system) is beneficial to health A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirmed what most nutrition experts have known or suspected for a long time. Among the best ways to ensure a healthy and diverse microbiome is to consume a fiber-rich, varied diet.

Unsurprisingly, researchers found that the foods tending to influence microbial diversity the most were high-fiber breads, poultry, fruits, vegetables, berries, and low-fat cheeses.

These results confirm and support findings of other smaller studies showing that a plant-based diet rich in fiber is associated with a more diverse and robust microbiome.

Sedentary Lifestyles Accelerate Aging

A recent study has shown that cells age faster during a sedentary lifestyle. This may not be good news for sedentary people.

Telomeres are the tiny caps located on the ends of DNA strands that protect them from fraying. We inherit telomeres from our parents, and regardless of the length of our telomeres at birth, everyone’s telomeres eventually shorten with age. Health status and unhealthy lifestyles are thought to accelerate the process, and scientific studies have shown a strong association between the length of telomeres and the cellular aging process.

Recently researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that mature women who sit for more than 10 hours a day and have a low physical activity level (less than 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity a day) had cells that were biologically older by eight years compared to less sedentary women.

It is important to note that this study only looked at the women's activity levels and telomeres at one point in time. It isn’t known whether activity levels or sitting causes telomeres to shorten and it isn’t clear if these results apply to men and younger people. However it’s difficult to argue that most of us would benefit from spending less time sitting down. Maybe it’s time to consider renewing that gym membership!

DIETARY ZINC INTAKE CRUCIAL TO DNA INTEGRITY IN HUMANS

If you stretched the DNA in one cell all the way out, it would be about 2m long and all the DNA in all your cells put together would be about twice the diameter of the Solar System.

Zinc is a very important trace mineral that plays a role in as many as 300 enzymes, including compounds related to defense of oxidative stress. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has also found that it plays a crucial role in the integrity and repair of DNA.

The study examined the effects of varying levels of zinc intake on DNA damage in healthy adult males. Nine healthy men with reported mean daily zinc intakes of 11 mg/day were subjected to three different dietary periods.

• Days 1-13 = baseline period (11 mg zinc/day)
• Days 14-55 = zinc depletion (0.6 mg zinc/day for 1 week, then 4 mg zinc/day for 5 weeks)
• Days 56-83 = zinc repletion (11 mg zinc/day for 4 weeks with 20 mg supplemental zinc for the first 7 days)

As expected, dietary zinc depletion was strongly associated with increased DNA breakage in peripheral blood cells. Additionally, zinc repletion reversed much of the observed DNA weakness. Plasma zinc concentrations were negatively correlated with DNA strand breaks during the entire zinc depletion period.

This study provides strong evidence for dietary zinc intake being a critical factor in maintaining DNA integrity in humans.
