Dr Nick Walsh, consultant psychiatrist, found that often patients didn’t always know whether they were supposed to request a GP summary themselves - GP practices have different rules. This could result in delays in getting the information and sometimes cancelled appointments, which was distressing for patients who have waited months, sometimes years for an assessment.

“When patients face frustrating admin delays, that’s not providing good health care.

Now we’re able to offer a much better patient experience by using ORB Connect. A lot of patients prefer to do this. Why? It’s quick, they can just do it, and they have control. They can cut off my access to that system anytime, whenever they want to. They have control of that, which I think is good, helpful. And from my point of view, it improves the quality of the care.”

Dr Nick Walsh, a consultant psychiatrist working with adults with ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions, used to wait weeks for GP summaries before he could prescribe. Now his team sends the ORB registration link as soon as the patient registers, so the record is usually there in time for the consultation, allowing him to focus on the purpose of the appointment without disruption or delay.

“It’s much, much quicker. We can send out the link as soon as the patient’s registered with me. It’s live information, and it reduces a lot of work from the patient because they get a link and just fill in the details. It doesn’t take very long to register and it’s usually there straight away.

Now we get a notification when the patient’s registered. It streamlines it enormously and it is much more efficient. It’s definitely removed a particular burden and a source of stress.”

For neurodivergent and complex patients, especially those on ADHD medication, there’s a lot of monitoring involved.

Dr Nick Walsh, consultant psychiatrist, needs to know what’s changed in patient NHS records. With live access to comprehensive information, he can check before prescribing every time, without going back to the GP practice for another summary - which also means fewer admin requests landing on already very busy GP teams.

He says, “You might be prescribing for a patient, seeing someone for six months and writing to the GP about them - how else do you know if the GP summary has changed unless you’re requesting a copy of it every month? The patient will tell you, but ORB Connect is live, so you can see if anything changes and you can just check it each time. So, it’s safer as well.

It’s also much more comprehensive, usually. There are different layers of access in terms of what the GP practices send. So not everything is always available, but for a lot of people, you can see consultations with the GP and all the test results and letters from other specialists.”

ORB is founded on the belief that connecting people with accurate health information, where and when they need it, truly makes a difference. David Haddrell’s story is a testament to this impact.

Faced with complex health challenges after reaching a weight of just under 30 stone, David sought advice from his trusted pharmacist. She recommended Dr Arpit Srivastava, an experienced NHS GP, who also runs a private practice treating weight loss patients. Before prescribing, Dr Arpit reviewed David’s complete NHS GP record in ORB (with his consent).

David said “I felt reassured that Dr Arpit would be able to prescribe the right treatment for me because he could see all my conditions, all my test results, all the types of medications I am on. I have a complex medical history and it’s hard to remember everything that has happened over the past few years.”

David received advice that fully considered his complex medical history before starting medication. After 11 weeks, David lost nearly 4 stone, “I can already stand up straight for short spells and my goal is to walk normally without a stick.” He now feels hopeful about a healthier future.
