We are delighted to announce Lord Chris Smith of Finsbury as National AIDS Trust’s Patron. The late Diana, Princess of Wales, remains our Founding Patron.

Lord Chris Smith made history as the first MP in the UK to voluntarily come out as gay, and in 2005 became the first Member of Parliament openly to declare his HIV‑positive status.

He has remained a prominent and vocal advocate for HIV rights and for tackling stigma and discrimination.

Lord Chris Smith said: “I’m honoured to have been invited to become Patron of National AIDS Trust. The advocacy and policy work the charity does in helping to shape the UK’s response to HIV is exceptionally important, and I look forward to working with the Trust to make further progress.”

Our Trustees and all the staff at National AIDS Trust look forward to working with Chris as we continue our vital work fighting for HIV rights.

📢HIV Confident – the charter mark supporting organisations to tackle HIV stigma – has been awarded a further three years of funding by Fast Track Cities London.

We’re delighted to share this news alongside the publication of our landmark report, Breaking Stigma, Building Confidence: https://ow.ly/VOGb50YT5Yq

In its first three years, HIV Confident has achieved:
• 100+ organisations signed up across NHS trusts, local authorities, the third sector and corporates
• 20+ organisations achieving HIV Confident recognition
• 8,000+ survey responses and 10,000+ eLearning modules completions

Annie Howard, Senior Programme Manager, said:

“No-one living with HIV should face stigma or discrimination at work, or when accessing an organisation’s services, yet too often people living with HIV face this in many aspects of their lives.

Breaking Stigma, Building Confidence demonstrates the significant impact of HIV Confident in addressing HIV stigma over its first three years. The funding extension will ensure more organisations are ready to tackle HIV stigma and allow everyone with HIV to live well.

It is our vision that every workplace and sector has the opportunity to become HIV Confident.”

Our response to today’s sentencing of Adam Hall for r**e and intentional transmission of HIV.

Daniel Fluskey, Director of Policy, National AIDS Trust said:

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today’s sentencing, first and foremost the people who are victims of Adam Hall’s crimes who have had deeply traumatic experiences. The intention of transmitting HIV to any other person is completely condemned, and this kind of prosecution is extremely rare.

It is important to recognise that HIV has changed considerably over recent years – the vast majority of people living with HIV are on medication, cannot pass the virus on, and expect a normal life expectancy.

As this case is discussed, we hope it helps improve the understanding of HIV and does not reinforce fear, stigma, or discrimination. HIV is now a manageable condition and no one should fear taking an HIV test and accessing treatment.

If anyone needs support, advice or information related to HIV they can contact THT Direct on 0808 802 1221.”
