🚀 Building Practical Health Informatics Solutions: From Clinical Decision Support to Disease Surveillance
One of the reasons I pursued a Master's in Health Informatics is the opportunity to transform clinical knowledge into practical digital tools that support healthcare professionals and improve decision-making.
As part of my learning journey, I recently developed a prototype web-based Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) for diabetes diagnosis, based on internationally recognized diagnostic criteria from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and established clinical guidelines.
The application accepts commonly used laboratory parameters, including:
🔹 Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)
🔹 2-hour Blood Sugar (OGTT)
🔹 Random Blood Sugar (RBS)
🔹 HbA1c
Using rule-based clinical logic, the system:
✅ Interprets laboratory findings
✅ Classifies the patient's diabetes status
✅ Provides diagnostic explanations
✅ Generates clinical notes to support physician decision-making
Although this is an early-stage prototype developed for educational purposes, it demonstrates how health informatics can bridge evidence-based clinical guidelines with digital technologies, making healthcare data more accessible, standardized, and actionable.
This project also illustrates how such systems can evolve beyond standalone applications by integrating with:
• Electronic Health Records (EHRs)
• Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
• HL7 FHIR-based interoperability frameworks
• Hospital information systems
• Population health databases
My broader goal is to develop digital health solutions that support both clinical care and public health.
Currently, I am working on:
📊 An interactive disease surveillance dashboard for real-time monitoring and early outbreak detection.
🏥 A scalable Electronic Health Record (EHR) prototype designed with interoperability and future integration in mind.
🔗 Exploring how standards such as HL7 FHIR, SNOMED CT, and LOINC can enable seamless data exchange and smarter clinical workflows.
As a physician transitioning into Health Informatics, I am excited to explore how data, interoperability, and digital technologies can contribute to more informed clinical decisions, stronger disease surveillance systems, and ultimately better health outcomes.
