If anyone is wondering why I paint wild horses, it is because of a memory from 1979. Two young girls set out on the American highways, completely without cell phones, GPS or safety nets, and it required a very special kind of courage and an unbridled longing for space. One of the girls was me. I remember the route from Minneapolis to Salt Lake City.
In the late 1970s, Greyhound buses ran from Minneapolis to Salt Lake City via the newly completed Interstate system. The trip usually took between 24 and 30 hours depending on whether you chose an express bus or a line with more local stops. The bus models: During the late 70s, the classic, silver-colored MCI MC-8 and the then brand new model MCI MC-9 were on the road. They were equipped with air conditioning and a toilet.
Those endless hours at the bus window, where the views slowly rolled by – the dusty plains, the blue silhouettes of the mountain ranges against the horizon, the smell of gasoline, dry earth and absolute freedom – nothing goes away. It sticks in your cell memory.
The buses never stopped at hotels. Instead, they drove in shifts where the drivers were changed about every 8 hours. We slept on the bus and made short stops at roadside restaurants or pure Greyhound stations out in the middle of nowhere to buy fast food, coffee and simple sandwiches.
Dazzling views, scorching heat outside when we got off the bus during a break, the worn jeans, the thin body, the tanned, blond hair. I have always said that I left my heart there.
As the bus drove along I-80 through southern Wyoming, it passed right through some of the most famous habitats for wild horses (mustangs) in the United States. I saw these free, incomparable horses, and how it affected me.
It's been a long time now. But I remember when I paint. Click on the comments and listen to the song.
