They are named in some of the oldest surviving texts of South and Central Asia as guardians beneath the world.

In the Mahābhārata, compiled from earlier oral traditions and written down over centuries, the Nagas are described as a powerful serpent-people whose realms lie below rivers, forests, and mountains. The epic speaks of Naga kings such as Takshaka and Vāsuki, rulers of subterranean domains where treasures and ancient knowledge are kept in trust. These are not described as barren underworlds, but as luminous regions beneath the earth — ordered, inhabited, and protected. The text places them at the boundary between the human realm and deeper layers of existence, keepers of what must be preserved when surface civilizations fall into disorder.

The Puranas expand this memory. In works such as the Bhāgavata Purāṇa and Vishnu Purāṇa, the Nagas dwell in Nāga-loka, a hidden stratum beneath the terrestrial world. There they guard jewels, archives, and cosmic secrets. These accounts consistently portray them as custodians rather than conquerors — sovereigns of vaults beneath mountains and oceans where knowledge survives the erosion of time.

In the Buddhist canon, particularly in early texts preserved in the Pali tradition and later Mahāyāna writings, the Nagas appear again as protectors of sacred teachings. One of the most enduring stories tells of the Naga king Mucalinda, who rose from the waters to shield the Buddha during meditation, coiling around him as a living canopy. Another tradition, preserved in later Buddhist literature, recounts that profound teachings were entrusted to Naga guardians beneath the waters until the philosopher Nāgārjuna was ready to receive them. Whether read literally or symbolically, the theme is constant: knowledge of great power is held in the depths until the world can receive it without distortion.

Archaeology echoes the texts. Across India, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos, temple complexes from the early centuries of the Common Era onward are approached by bridges flanked with stone Nagas. These are not decorative alone. They mark thresholds — entrances into sacred spaces where the visible world meets the hidden one. The builders placed serpent guardians at these crossings to signify that wisdom flows from deeper strata, and that passage into sanctity requires reverence.

Through epic, Purana, and Buddhist chronicle, the image remains remarkably consistent. Beneath the rivers and beneath the mountains are chambers of preservation. There dwell the Nagas — kings and queens of the subterranean realms, wardens of sacred knowledge, guardians of the deep archives of the earth. They are remembered not as figures of fear, but as keepers of continuity, holding what must endure through the rise and fall of civilizations.

Some traditions say the Nagas walked openly among early peoples. Others say they withdrew when human societies grew loud and forgetful. The chronicles do not speak of their disappearance, only of their veiling. So the legend stands in the written record.

Beneath the surface of the world lies a treasury. Beneath the movement of history, a memory. And within those hidden halls, the Nagas keep watch — protectors of wisdom placed in the deep until the time comes for its return.
