The Urnes Style (1040 – 1150) – This Urnes Style inspired tattoo was done by machine and drawn directly on the skin, no stencils. The Urnes style is the last phase of Viking art. It takes its name from the remarkable carved wooden doors of the stave church at Urnes in Norway, you see on the 3rd slide. The style is a refinement if the Ringerike style and depends upon interplay of gracefully curving lines for its effect.

The animals are still curvaceous and one or more snakes are included with the quadrupeds. The spiral hip is still used, but it is not as large as in the Mammen and Ringerike styles. The animals have large almond-shaped eyes and often bite one another. The Urnes style was often used on runic stones, when the runic inscription was carried within the body of the animal. A fine example from Lingsberg, Uppland, Sweden, has a Christian cross and two Urnes style animals which carry the runic inscription.

Gjermundbu Sword Tattoo – I really love to go through the archives of museums to find all the info you get from finds like this sword and turn them into a tattoo inspired by it. Look at the details of this example: The Gjermundbu Sword is a double-edged iron sword with inlaid silver decoration, Petersen type R (J. Petersen 1919). The sword closely resembles Rygh 504. The pommel is five-part, forged from several pieces; the two outermost parts form the snouts and heads of two animal heads facing away from each other. Two through-going rivets are visible beneath the animal heads in the X-ray photograph.

The transitions between the pommel sections, as well as the transition between the pommel and the upper guard, are marked with braided and twisted silver wire. The sword pommel is densely decorated with inlaid, dotted bands forming interlacing patterns and spirals. The decoration on the upper and lower guards consists mainly of multi-line, dotted bands with spiral ends and similar motifs.

On the upper side of the lower guard, two intertwined serpent figures can be seen, one on each side of the grip. On the underside, there is a simple leaf motif on each side. The silver inlay is partially melted away, particularly on one side of the lower guard.

The blade itself is forged from longitudinally welded strips, with a relatively thin blade and a shallow, broad fuller. The sword is illustrated in Sørheim, H. 1997, figs. 12–14.

Handpoked Wolf, Runes by machine. This tattoo was made for a lovely guy from france coming all the way over to sweden to connect with his roots. Half swedish, half french - so we decided to get inspired by a famous runestone, which propably depicts a wolf, maybe Fenrir. The Tullstorpstenen. The inscription on the Tullstorp Runestone consists of runic text on a serpent band that frames a central image consisting of a ship and a beast, which has been described as being a wolf. The stone is granite and 1.7 meters in height, and the inscription is classified as being carved in runestone style Pr1, which is also known as Ringerike style.

The Tullstorp Runestone is a Viking Age memorial runestone, listed as DR 271 in the Rundata catalog, that is located in Tullstorp, which is about twenty kilometers east of Trelleborg, Skåne County, Sweden, and in the historic province of Scania.

Inspiration for the next Tattoo. I saw this Tongue-shaped bronze brooch with silver hanging ring at Historiska museet museet in Stockholm. Decorated in Jelling Style from around 800-1100 Viking age. Found at Svarta Jorden, Birka, Adelsö Parish, Uppland in Sweden. Such a beautiful shape and design.

Amanita regalis, commonly known as the royal fly agaric or the king of Sweden Amanita, is a species of fungus in the family Amanitaceae. A. regalis has a scabby liver-brown cap and a stem which is yellow-ochre at the base, with patches or rings of patches. The fruit bodies somewhat resemble the smaller A. muscaria (fly agaric), which it was formerly regarded as a variety of. A. regalis is common in Scandinavia and also found in eastern and northern Europe. Its North American distribution is restricted to Alaska. Like A. muscaria, it is poisonous and contains the p5ychoactive compound muscimol.

Jelling Style (900—975) Wolf with Mushrooms. The Viking art style Jellinge is a phase of Scandinavian animal art that took place during the late 10th century. Bridging the earlier Borre style with the later Mammen style, it is characterized by ribbon-like stylized animal motifs and band-shaped bodies of animals. It was originally applied to a variety of objects in Jelling, Denmark, such as Gorm’s Cup by King Gorm and Harald Bluetooth’s great runestone, but more recently the style is included in the Mammen style.

Nordic tattoo in Sweden - Jormungandr and a Seal - A sleeve dedicated to Rán, the goddess of the sea. In Norse mythology, Rán is a goddess and personification of the sea. Rán and her husband Ægir, a jötunn who also personifies the sea, produced together nine daughters who personify the sea waves. Rán also has a son Snær who personifies the snow. Rán may also be the mother of the beautiful jötunn Gerðr, wife of the god Freyr. The goddess is frequently associated with a net, which she uses to capture sea-goers. According to the prose introduction to a poem in the Poetic Edda and in Völsunga saga, Rán once loaned her net to the god Loki.

Nordic tattoo for Nils Strandell inspired by Ringerike Style of the Viking age. This is a gilded bronze weather vane. Decorated in Ringerike Style. Consists of large and small bronze plates and an animal figure which stands on the upper edge. The holes on the curved underside functioned as loops for free hanging leaves, which are missing. The main part of the weather vane consists of an openwork part with three animal figures and intertwined loops. The main figure is a winged animal with curved neck, outstretched front leg and narrow back portion. The back leg is missing. A circle-shaped, curved animal is lying around it and biting front leg of the main animal. The third animal is twined around the trunk of the main animal and does not have legs. This weather vane sat on the tower of Söderala Church and arrived at the museum in 1917 from Söderala Church, Söderala Parish, Hälsingland.
