We're marking with a special episode of Drug Safety Matters 🌱

The approach is reshaping the way we think about medicines safety across human, animal, and environmental systems. Valentina Giunchi and Joe Mitchell explain how seeks to address the potential risks that pharmaceuticals pose to ecosystems, and why practical solutions need to be implemented throughout the entire life cycle of medicines to curb the impact of pharmaceutical pollution.

The approach recognises that human, animal, and environmental health are interconnected and must all be prioritised to help prevent future global health crises.

Four key principles guide the approach:
1️⃣ Interconnectedness
2️⃣ Intersectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration
3️⃣ Prevention
4️⃣ Global perspective

For One Health to be effective, cooperation and collaboration are needed across sectors and disciplines at the national, regional, and international levels.

The next stop on our journey this week is human and veterinary 👤🐾

Despite focusing on different species, human and veterinary PV share many cross-disciplinary approaches to improving human and animal health. Drug safety issues concerning medicines used in animals may signal a potential human threat and vice versa. Both stand to gain from enhanced collaboration through the One Health approach.

Following the ISoP Africa Chapter Meeting, UMC was pleased to participate in a workshop on detecting, classifying, and responding to Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESIs) for vaccine safety surveillance in Africa.

Held in Windhoek, Namibia🇳🇦, the event brought together participants from pharmacovigilance centres and immunisation programmes across 15 African countries for practical, hands‑on training using real‑world scenarios, demonstrating how UMC tools ( and ) and resources can be used to detect AESIs. The workshop also explored how resources offered by Safety Platform for Emergency Vaccines (SPEAC) and Brighton Collaboration can be utilised alongside UMC resources to improve AESI identification, triage discipline, signal detection, and proportionate regulatory decision‑making during emergency vaccine rollouts.

Thank you to workshop coordinators, Africa CDC, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations - CEPI and SPEAC, and attendees for a fruitful training session!

From bandages to pacemakers, medical devices play a vital role in modern healthcare and in the daily lives of patients. Monitoring the safety of these devices can be complex, as it must consider not only medical risks, but also technological and engineering risks, such as cybersecurity threats or outdated software.

In this two-part episode, Omar Aimer, President of ISoP Online, breaks down medical device vigilance and shares how global initiatives are working to strengthen safety monitoring standards.
