Treating the Root Cause: How TCM Identifies Imbalances in Skin Diseases

Our skin is not only our protective barrier to the environment, but also a mirror to our internal health. In TCM, imbalances in our body often manifest themselves as skin disorders. Their root causes may involve the imbalances between Yin, Yang, Qi and the Blood, or pathogenic factors such as wind, dryness, dampness, cold or heat.

TCM treats skin disorders in a unique way. It addresses both the root causes and branch symptoms of a condition to restore healthy balance to the body.

The Concept of Balance in TCM:

TCM is rooted in the belief that health is a state of harmony within the body as well as between the body and our evnriornment. This is summed up in the idea of Yin and Yang, opposites that depend on one another and balance each other.

Pathogenic Influences

The six pathogenic factors—wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, and summer heat—represent various environmental forces that can disrupt our internal balance and contribute to illness. When our bodies are imbalanced, either due to emotional stress, poor diet, or other factors, the body’s natural ability to fight off illness becomes damaged and we become more vulnerable to these pathogenic influences.

Wind:
Wind is an important pathogenic factor in TCM dermatology because it often leads to the uncomfortable symptom of itching. It is associated with conditions like eczema, urticaria, and pruritus, which may manifest as itching and rashes that move or change quickly. Many herbs which dispel wind are known to reduce itch and lessen the allergic responses.

Heat or Fire:
Heat and fire are yang pathogenic factors that are associated with fever, inflammation, irritability, and infection. Heat is the root cause of many inflammatory skin conditions like acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and many eczema cases. Redness on the skin is a sign of heat. The redder the skin the stronger the heat. Inflamed blisters are also can be a sign of strong toxic heat. Herbal medicines that relieve heat have been found to be anti inflammatory and antibacterial. Cupping and scraping can also be used to rapidly reduce intense heat.

Dampness:
Dampness can accumulate in the body and cause swelling, heaviness, and other symptoms. Dampness is a heavy pathogen causing a feeling of sluggishness. Skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, many types of eczema, and acne have dampness as a factor. Symptoms may include weeping, non-inflammed blisters, or swelling of the skin, often accompanied by a sensation of heaviness. Dampness can also be a cause of itch. Herbs that clear dampness help to reducing inflammation, swelling, and itch. Some of the strongest anti-itch medicines help by addressing the damp accumulation.

Damp Heat:
In many inflammatory skin diseases, the dampness will combine with heat to form damp heat. Damp heat is a complex condition that arises when excess heat and dampness accumulate in the body, leading to many skin conditions. Damp heat can lead to skin issues like eczema, acne, or rashes, often characterized by redness, itching, weeping, oozing, and a sensation of warmth. The inflammation from damp heat often is associated with swelling, inflamed blisters, crusting, and oozing. This is also associated with infection. When treating damp heat, the degree of each component is precisely accessed to tailor the treatment approach. Herbs that clear damp heat are often anti-inflammtory and antibacterial.

Dryness:
Dryness is a pathogenic factor that can cause dry, flaky, or itchy skin, often seen in conditions like xerosis and aging skin. TCM treatments for dryness-related skin diseases may involve nourishing yin, moisturizing the skin, and promoting fluid balance with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary therapy.

Cold
Cold can invade the body and cause a constriction of blood vessels, slowing down blood circulation and leading to pain, stiffness, and other symptoms. Cold is not a major factor in most skin diseases. Cold may show up as blue or pale on the skin.

Other diseases related to cold may be joint pain. Treatment will focus on warming the body, using techniques such as moxibustion, warming herbs, and acupuncture points that promote warmth and circulation.

Summer Heat (暑, shǔ):
Summer heat is a unique TCM concept that refers to the heat and humidity typically experienced during the summer months. It can lead to symptoms like fever, dehydration, dizziness, and fatigue, and is often associated with heat stroke and heat exhaustion. For skin diseases, it is primarily related to sunburns. TCM treatments for summer heat-related skin diseases aim to clear excess heat from the body, reduce inflammation, and promote fluid balance to allow the body to heal.

Treating the Root Cause @ Joy TCM Clinic

After determining the specific imbalance underlying the condition, our experienced physician Joy will create a treatment course to address it. Let’s take eczema for example. Eczema may be caused by many imbalances, with heat being the most common. The goal is to determine the type of heat, strength of the imbalance, and the presence of wind or dampness to create the correct treatment. This is done through looking at the skin, taking a medical history, and observing the pulse and tongue.

For blood heat with wind, herbs that reduce both blood heat and wind would be prescribed. But if there is more dampness, we would use herbs for damp heat. If it is a very strong flare then heat toxicity herbs would need to be used to reduce the heat toxins. Once you remove the toxins the body’s natural healing ability can return and to return to a state of balance.

The TCM therapeutic principle works by clearing away the heat and dampness through bowels, urine and skin; by expelling wind and detoxifying the body, as well as moistening the dryness and nourishing the Blood.

A combination of acupuncture treatment, external applications and the intake of herbal medication can bring about relief.

If you or your loved ones are experiencing any skin conditions, please don't hesitate to whatsapp us @ 91900257 for a consultation today! Kindly make an appointment before you make your way down. Thanks!

Hives Treatment with TCM

Skin rash with itchy welts or red bumps that seem to appear suddenly, then move to another part of the body, or go away? Hives, also known as urticaria, are caused by a type of allergic reaction that creates a temporary rash or swelling of the skin. TCM and acupuncture have been used for centuries to help relieve hives caused by allergies.

Hives are fairly common, occurring in about 20% of people of all ages. An acute, or short-lived, case of hives may occur because of being exposed to some unusual, new chemical or natural irritant in a person’s environment, maybe in some product, or some pollen or bug. These usually go away quickly, and it may be fairly obvious what it was that caused the outbreak of hives. However, sometimes people develop chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU), in which a person may break out in hives often on an ongoing basis and have no idea why it keeps happening.

Allergies can manifest in many ways: sometimes causing sneezing, watery eyes, or skin problems. Hives are another way that an allergic reaction can show up. Hives, or urticaria, are distinguishable from other types of skin rash, like dermatitis eczema, or shingles rash, because, unlike other rashes, they do not form fluid-filled bumps or cause dryness, scaliness, or cracking of the skin. Rather, hives are raised welts on the skin that appear red, but then turn white when you press on them; this is known as “blanching.” Hives can look like small, narrow lines, or big, patchy blotches.

Urticaria is related to, and sometimes confused with, angioedema, which is a similar condition, in which deep layers of skin become swollen, often around the eyes and mouth, also due to irritation by some allergen. Angioderma can coexist with hives, and can be more dangerous than hives, if it causes tissues in the throat or tongue to become so swollen that the airway is blocked.

Hives often clear up on their own within a few days or weeks without any treatment. However, some people develop chronic hives, in which the hives rash keeps recurring for weeks or months, or longer. Chronic hives can be a uniquely painful and frustrating condition; never knowing when you might break out into a burning, itchy rash. Hives worse at night or hives worse after sleeping are common experiences for people who suffer from chronic urticaria. Breaking out in hives can make a person feel panic, making it very difficult to get on with daily tasks. Acupuncture treatment can help alleviate the burning and itching of acute hives or chronic hives, and help relieve the allergies, stress, and other underlying conditions that bring them on.

10 Hives Causes or Triggers

In general, what causes hives most of the time is an allergic reaction to some external stimulus. Touching something, eating something, or inhaling something that you are allergic to can cause urticaria to break out on the skin, sometimes briefly, sometimes moving around from one area or the skin to another, or seeming to spread over the skin. Things that can cause hives include:

Foods, especially those that are well-known allergens like nuts, shellfish, dairy, and eggs, but also fruits, especially citrus fruits
Contact with certain plants
Pollen in the environment
Medications, including antibiotics, OTC pain relievers
Latex
Pet dander
External stimuli from the climate – sun exposure, heat, cold
Bacterial infections in the body, like strep throat or a UTI
Viral infections in the body, like colds, hepatitis or mononucleosis (viral hives)
Blood transfusions

Insect bites or itchy rashes that cause you to scratch at your skin can also cause hives to appear in other areas. Simple pressure on the skin, from sitting or leaning on a patch of skin for a long time, can cause hives. Some people break out in hives when they are under a lot of pressure or emotional stress, even if they are not aware of having allergies or other underlying causes for hives. Sometimes this is called a “stress rash.”

How can TCM help treat Hives?

In TCM, the concept of Wei Qi refers to the body’s protective defenses, the action of which stems mainly from the lungs and the skin. Many types of illness are considered to be related to a weakness or breakdown in the Wei Qi that allows external pathogenic factors to enter the body and take hold. Wind is one such external pathogenic factor. Heat and cold are others. Viral and bacterial infections also find their way into the body when the Wei Qi energy is weakened.

6 Pathogenic Factors According to TCM:

Wind
Cold
Summer Heat
Dampness
Dryness
Fire

Hives come mostly from wind and heat. In TCM, urticaria is known as Feng Zhen Kuai, or “wind rash patch.” Wind describes the nature of urticaria rash in the sense that the hives welts come and go, as if blown about.

When people get hives, it is usually because of one of a few common factors.

Yin deficiency/Dryness – If the body is too dry, when any allergens get in, there is not enough moisture in the body to wash them out of the system; this causes the breakout.

Fire/Heat – If there is too much heat, fire, and inflammation in the body, when there is exposure to allergens, the body can’t take any more and will break out.

Liver stagnation with Heat – When a person is under stress for a long time, it can exacerbate stagnation of Qi in the liver system, which over time causes heat to build up, then the body cannot process little irritations. The liver and kidneys have to do all the work to filter toxins out of the body, but when those organs are overstressed, the body will try to get rid of excess heat through the skin.

Usually, if a person is having chronic hives, it has a lot to do with their food and their habits around their exposure to the elements.

Hence, the aim of acupuncture treatment is to help strengthen the lungs, the liver and Wei Qi. Chinese medicine herbs are also prescribed to help relieve hives.

Top 5 Tips for Hives Relief

How to get rid of hives for good will mean paying attention to what triggers the rash for each individual. To avoid this kind of allergic reaction hives, protect your Wei Qi with healthy habits. Prioritize rest and good nutrition to build up your immunity and protect your lungs and skin.

-Avoid a cold wind blowing on you, whether outside, or from a fan or air conditioner. Dress appropriately; always bring an extra layer so you don’t catch a chill or have a bright sun shining on your skin for a long time when you didn’t expect it.

-Avoid very hot showers, baths, saunas, etc.

-Engage in regular exercise to help boost your blood circulation; walking is always ideal. This will help to reduce stress, as will a meditation practice.

-Get plenty of rest. Good quality sleep is essential to help build up the Wei Qi.

-Avoid foods that are either too hot (spicy or fried, red meats) or too cold (raw foods). No alcohol or coffee. These triggering foods and beverages can really make the hives worse. Drink more water to eliminate the dryness in the body.

If a patient is having trouble figuring out what it is that is causing his or her hives breakouts, a TCM provider may be able to find the underlying reason behind the rash.

Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle with TCM

In TCM literature, Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture has played a role in Gynaecology for thousands of years. At Joy TCM Clinic, menstrual cycle support begins with educating each patient about the phases of their menstrual cycle including not only the period bleed but also the main event, Ovulation.

By empowering our patients to expand their knowledge of their own menstrual cycle this allows them to become familiar with associated symptoms from pain to moodiness that are experienced throughout their cycle and how to live with the seasons of the menstrual cycle.

Integrating TCM and Biomedical Approaches for Menstrual Cycle Balance

From a TCM perspective, the menstrual cycle is a monthly diagnostic tool used which gives a woman a cyclical insight into their hormonal health. The uniqueness of each woman is acknowledged throughout TCM and this is reflected in each woman’s menstrual cycle. Each woman’s personalised cycle should aim to be regular and optimally occur in a consistent cycle with a healthy monthly menstrual flow.

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture treatments can support the hormones by regulating the function of the Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) axis and Hypothalamic Pituitary Ovarian (HPO) axis to support efficient Ovulation, improving cycle regularity and associated cycle symptoms.

If your cycle is not comfortable and you don’t understand your own personal flow, Joy TCM Clinic provides a supportive and educational sphere in which through practitioner guidance, can assist you in becoming familiar with your own body, menstrual cycle and the accompanying signs and symptoms to enable your hormones to support you.

Through an integrative lens, Joy TCM Clinic practitioner will consider internal factors from a biomedical perspective including pathology assessment and a range of modalities can be used including Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Chinese Dietary Therapy and Supplementation.
