TCM Treatment for Ovarian Cysts

Are you having sharp pain at the lower abdomen? Feeling bloated or heavy? Pain during in*******se? These can all be signs of an ovarian cyst. TCM can help relieve pain in lower left abdomen or sharp pain lower right abdomen, while also addressing the root cause of ovarian cysts.

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within an o***y. These cysts are quite common and often form naturally during the menstrual cycle. While many ovarian cysts are harmless and resolve on their own without causing symptoms, some can lead to pain and may indicate underlying health issues.

TCM has centuries-old methods of helping to regulate women’s hormonal health and offers natural solutions for reproductive care, especially focusing on ovarian health.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

Many people may have ovarian cysts without knowing it, because they do not always cause painful symptoms. However, sometimes a cyst can cause a lot of pain, or may cause pain and bloating that comes and goes during different phases of the menstrual cycle, or due to other factors.

Pelvic Pain, dull or sharp ache in the lower abdomen, often on one side: ache in lower left abdomen, lower left hand abdominal pain, pain in lower right abdomen.

Bloating, feeling of fullness or heaviness in the abdomen.

Pain During In*******se, discomfort during sexual activity.

Menstrual irregularities, unusual bleeding patterns, including heavier or lighter periods

Frequent urination, increased urge to urinate due to pressure on the bladder.

Constipation, difficult bowel movements.

Nausea, vomiting, especially if a cyst causes the o***y to twist (ovarian torsion)

Ovarian Cyst Diagnosis and Treatment

In Western medicine, ovarian cysts are typically diagnosed through a pelvic examination followed by imaging studies such as ultrasound, which helps determine the cyst’s size, shape, and composition. Additional tests like blood work may be conducted to assess hormone levels or rule out malignancy.

Sometimes the o***y and/or fallopian tube becomes twisted and is pulling on surrounding tissues; this is called ovarian torsion. This cuts off circulation to the o***y, which not only can cause severe pain, but can lead to the “death” of the o***y. This is a serious condition, which requires surgery to untwist or remove the o***y and sometimes the fallopian tube.

When there is no ovarian torsion, the treatment for a cyst will usually involve a wait and see approach, monitoring the cyst over time to see if it resolves naturally, especially if it’s small and asymptomatic.

Hormonal contraceptives may be prescribed to prevent the formation of new cysts, though they won’t shrink existing ones.
In cases where cysts are large, persistent, or causing significant discomfort, surgical removal may be recommended. Procedures range from minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to more extensive laparotomy, depending on the cyst’s characteristics and suspicion of malignancy.

TCM offer alternative approaches to treating ovarian cysts, focusing on restoring balance.

Qn: Can Acupuncture Help Treat Ovarian Cysts?

If you are experiencing serious pain in the left lower quadrant or right lower quadrant, it is important to seek urgent medical care and diagnostics, because ovarian torsion can, in some cases, lead to a rupture and even possibly life-threatening sepsis.

However, in many cases, an enlarged cyst can be helped with complementary therapy with acupuncture and other TCM treatment for cysts.

In TCM, we do not just look at treating the symptoms of a cyst that has already formed. We dig deeper to look at the reasons why cysts are developing on the ovaries. Acupuncture offers a multifaceted approach to treating ovarian cysts by addressing underlying
imbalances and promoting the body’s natural healing processes.

A comprehensive treatment protocol for ovarian cysts may include:

-Electro-Acupuncture: By identifying the precise location of the cyst through palpation or medical imaging, practitioners can apply electro-acupuncture directly to the affected area. This involves inserting needles into specific abdominal and lower back points and administering electrical stimulation for approximately 30 minutes, aiming to reduce the cyst’s size and alleviate associated symptoms.

-Meridian Point Stimulation: Targeting points along the Liver and Gall Bladder meridians helps to relieve stagnation and promote the smooth flow of Qi. Additionally, points will be used to address dampness and phlegm accumulation, which are often associated with cyst formation.

In addition to acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine plays a crucial role in the treatment of ovarian cysts. Specific herbs are known for their properties in invigorating blood circulation and resolving phlegm stagnation. These herbs can be integrated into formulas tailored to the individual’s specific pattern of disharmony, considering factors like Spleen dampness, Liver Qi stagnation, and internal heat.

Implementing lifestyle modifications is also essential in managing and preventing ovarian cysts. Your TCM practitioner will talk with you in-depth about dietary changes that may help combat Spleen dampness. Meditation and movement practices like Qi Gong and Tai Qi can help alleviate stress and promote the smooth flow of Qi. Some simple changes in physical habits, like crossing the legs can contribute to Qi stagnation in the pelvic region.

By integrating these acupuncture techniques, herbal remedies, and lifestyle adjustments, TCM offers a holistic and individualized approach to treating ovarian cysts, aiming to restore balance and promote overall reproductive health.

8 Wellness Tips to Achieve Optimal Fertility Wellness

The ability to get pregnant and deliver a healthy baby is the dream of many women and couples. Unfortunately, one of every six women and couples may experience infertility and can have difficulty conceiving.

Although the use of fertility therapies is very common, many medical providers may overlook what women and couples may do themselves to optimize their fertility.

Optimal fertility is affected by a variety of factors including:
Age
Prior medical and pregnancy history
Timing of sexual in*******se
Lifestyle factors like drug and alcohol consumption
However, many not be aware of best practices to optimize their own wellness.

Here are eight wellness tips that can put you back in the driver’s seat and may improve your overall health and fertility potential:

1. Reduce Stress
Hearing you need to be less stressed to be more fertile might make you scream, but think of it from the perspective of the body. If your body is constantly running on adrenaline, it’s in a constant state of fight or flight. It is ideal to create a more receptive frame of mind when it comes to fertility.

The word “stress” has become interchangeable with almost every situation we don’t want or wish we didn’t have to deal with. If you define every inconvenience, time crunch, missed opportunity or delay as stress, your body will respond by being stressed.
Some things in life are just inconveniences (though annoying), so change your perception and save the alarm bells for something truly urgent or alarming.

Tips to Reduce Stress
-Regular yoga practice
-Meditation sessions
-Set your phone on do not disturb or minimize notifications
-Schedule time for yourself
-Check out our blog on coping with emotional stress during infertility.

2. Get a Solid 8 Hours of Sleep
Sleeping well is an art form. Our bodies repair themselves during the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. But many of us are still up doing the last load of laundry or finishing up those last emails, which reduces our precious repair time.

Do your best to be in bed, if not asleep, by 10 p.m.
Based upon prior studies, blue light spectrum emitted from tablets, phones and computer screens, inhibits the production of melatonin and may disturb our ability to close down shop for the day.
Rather than scrolling through your phone or computer before bed to read that last email or to check on your Twitter feed, try creating a restful oasis with luxury linens, cool color palettes and soothing lighting to help you drift off to sleep when it’s lights out.

Deep restful sleep helps the body reset and ensures energy reserves are replenished. This is a key method to ensuring your energy tank is full and to optimize your well-being.

Tips to Improve Sleep
-Set a regular bedtime
-Put away your phone at least 1 hour before bed
-Dim the lights before bedtime
-Use an eye mask to block light

3. Practice Mindful Eating

Being conscious about eating is not just limited to what you put in your mouth. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the season of the year should also be considered when choosing your weekly menu.

What you eat and drink should take care of the daily demands of life each day. If your diet is inadequate, your body will draw from energy reserves that are usually reserved in case of a life-threatening situation or to conceive a baby.

By choosing seasonal foods, you can help your body deal with the demands of the season and keep your body in an all-systems-go posture when you are trying to conceive.

Eating warm meals and drinking hot beverages, greatly reduces the demands placed on the body to maintain its interior warmth and moisture. Choosing recipes for casseroles, soups, congees (think Chinese oatmeal) combine the warmth and moisture needed to keep our womb warm.

Foods Beneficial for Fertility
-Chinese Red Dates
-Walnuts
-Maca Herb
-Monk’s Hand Fruit
-Tangerine Peel
-Fatty Fish
-High Fiber Foods

4. Cultivate a Support Network

For many women, their infertility journey has become a major facet of their lives. They don’t share their struggles with friends or family because they don’t want to admit something is really wrong or they may feel shame about having difficulties.

Going at it alone is not the answer.

Creating a “fertility tribe” to lean on during the process of conceiving can provide significant support. Beyond confiding in friends and family, there are many avenues out there for finding support such as fertility support group, healthcare specialists (doctors, TCM Physicians) and fertility massage therapists etc.

5. Balance “Being” and “Doing”

In TCM, it is imperative that “being” (Yin) and “doing” (Yang) energies are balanced each day. Our culture promotes, go, go, go and very little, be, be, be.

These days, having time to relax or live in the moment creates distress. Finding the right balance between Yin and Yang can be challenging in a culture that undervalues resting.

We see this clearly play out in some modern yoga practices where the spiritual aspects have been overwhelmed by high intensity, over heated calisthenics.

More is not always better.

Cultivate balance by setting aside a little time each day to reconnect with your spirit. It may be a cup of tea in the morning before the world wakes up, a short meditation practice before bedtime, or taking five minutes to feel grateful for all of the things that went right in your day.

6. Track Your Menstrual Cycle

Many women may not have a clear understanding of how their monthly menstrual cycle works. The most common area of uncertainty is when the most fertile time of the cycle is.

Women often assume that the “fertile window” is around mid-cycle. However, this is usually valid if a woman’s period happens every 28 days. In many cases, an over-the-counter kit can be used to predict the time of ovulation (monthly release of an egg).

The “fertile window” is the 5 days leading up to ovulation and including the day of ovulation.

Understanding your body and knowing when to try to conceive during the “fertile window” can often be the difference between whether you conceive or not. Get to know your body and your cycle. It may be the shortest and easiest route to pregnancy.

7. Exercise Regularly – But Don’t Over do It

The movement of Qi is essential for balanced living and healthy fertility in TCM. Qi is essential for maintaining warmth and the smooth flow of energy through the energy pathways or “meridians” that govern the body. When exercise becomes too explosive or intense, it tends to deplete energy and drains fertile potency through the loss of too much sweat (dehydration) or overconsumption of too many calories.

Use exercise as a way of reducing stress, gently maintaining the balance and movement of the body’s energy and promoting core warmth needed for conception.

Signs You’re Exercising Too Much
-Fatigue that lingers after workouts
-Shorter or more irregular periods
-Body fat loss that disrupts hormone balance (there is an ideal balance between estrogen and body fat)
-Dry hair/skin/nails
-Injuries to joints.

As with most things in life, exercise is good when utilized in moderation.

8. Treat Each Day as a New Opportunity

Each day is a new opportunity to focus on one piece of your fertility puzzle and get the support you need to turn struggles into triumphs. Having a positive perception can make a huge difference during this time in your life. Focusing on “fertility” instead of “infertility” may make all the difference between seeing options or roadblocks.

When navigating the fertility journey, optimizing your wellness may be as important as your fertility treatment plan. Taking care of yourself and seeking the support of family, friends, and a talented team of providers will allow you to focus on achieving future success.

TCM Fertility Program @ Joy TCM Clinic

Whether you’re trying to conceive naturally or with the assistance of IUI/IVF, TCM offers a comprehensive approach to enhance fertility. By addressing the root causes of infertility and promoting overall health, TCM can improve the chances of conception and support a healthy pregnancy. For those seeking TCM fertility treatments in Singapore, Joy TCM Clinic provides expert care and personalized treatment plans to help you on your fertility journey.
During each treatment session, you can expect a variety of treatments (acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, scraping, Chinese herbal medicine) that will be administered. Each treatment session is customized personally for you and according to each stage of your menstrual cycle.

It’s a Team Effort: Include Your Partner

One of the most important things we tell patients is: fertility is a shared journey. While female fertility is often the focus, male health matters just as much. In fact, around 40% of fertility issues involve the male partner.

That’s why it is encouraged that both partners to come to the first consultation. We can check for simple but important factors like; s***m health, hormone balance, or lifestyle exposures that may be interfering. And having these conversations as a couple makes the process more supportive and less stressful.

When to Seek Advice

You don’t need to wait a year of “trying” before checking in with your doctor—especially if:
• Your periods are irregular or absent
• You’re over 35
• You’ve had a miscarriage before
• You have a history of conditions like PCOS or endometriosis
• You’re feeling anxious and want to be proactive

For couples under 35, we typically start investigations after 12 months of trying. If you are over 35, it’s best to check in after 6 months. But there’s no harm in seeking guidance earlier.

Treating the Root Cause: How TCM Identifies Imbalances in Skin Diseases

Our skin is not only our protective barrier to the environment, but also a mirror to our internal health. In TCM, imbalances in our body often manifest themselves as skin disorders. Their root causes may involve the imbalances between Yin, Yang, Qi and the Blood, or pathogenic factors such as wind, dryness, dampness, cold or heat.

TCM treats skin disorders in a unique way. It addresses both the root causes and branch symptoms of a condition to restore healthy balance to the body.

The Concept of Balance in TCM:

TCM is rooted in the belief that health is a state of harmony within the body as well as between the body and our evnriornment. This is summed up in the idea of Yin and Yang, opposites that depend on one another and balance each other.

Pathogenic Influences

The six pathogenic factors—wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, and summer heat—represent various environmental forces that can disrupt our internal balance and contribute to illness. When our bodies are imbalanced, either due to emotional stress, poor diet, or other factors, the body’s natural ability to fight off illness becomes damaged and we become more vulnerable to these pathogenic influences.

Wind:

Wind is an important pathogenic factor in TCM dermatology because it often leads to the uncomfortable symptom of itching. It is associated with conditions like eczema, urticaria, and pruritus, which may manifest as itching and rashes that move or change quickly. Many herbs which dispel wind are known to reduce itch and lessen the allergic responses.

Heat or Fire:

Heat and fire are yang pathogenic factors that are associated with fever, inflammation, irritability, and infection. Heat is the root cause of many inflammatory skin conditions like acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and many eczema cases. Redness on the skin is a sign of heat. The redder the skin the stronger the heat. Inflamed blisters are also can be a sign of strong toxic heat. Herbal medicines that relieve heat have been found to be anti inflammatory and antibacterial. Cupping and scraping can also be used to rapidly reduce intense heat.

Dampness:

Dampness can accumulate in the body and cause swelling, heaviness, and other symptoms. Dampness is a heavy pathogen causing a feeling of sluggishness. Skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, many types of eczema, and acne have dampness as a factor. Symptoms may include weeping, non-inflammed blisters, or swelling of the skin, often accompanied by a sensation of heaviness. Dampness can also be a cause of itch. Herbs that clear dampness help to reducing inflammation, swelling, and itch. Some of the strongest anti-itch medicines help by addressing the damp accumulation.

Damp Heat:

In many inflammatory skin diseases, the dampness will combine with heat to form damp heat. Damp heat is a complex condition that arises when excess heat and dampness accumulate in the body, leading to many skin conditions. Damp heat can lead to skin issues like eczema, acne, or rashes, often characterized by redness, itching, weeping, oozing, and a sensation of warmth. The inflammation from damp heat often is associated with swelling, inflamed blisters, crusting, and oozing. This is also associated with infection. When treating damp heat, the degree of each component is precisely accessed to tailor the treatment approach. Herbs that clear damp heat are often anti-inflammtory and antibacterial.

Dryness:

Dryness is a pathogenic factor that can cause dry, flaky, or itchy skin, often seen in conditions like xerosis and aging skin. TCM treatments for dryness-related skin diseases may involve nourishing yin, moisturizing the skin, and promoting fluid balance with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary therapy.

Cold

Cold can invade the body and cause a constriction of blood vessels, slowing down blood circulation and leading to pain, stiffness, and other symptoms. Cold is not a major factor in most skin diseases. Cold may show up as blue or pale on the skin.

Other diseases related to cold may be joint pain. Treatment will focus on warming the body, using techniques such as moxibustion, warming herbs, and acupuncture points that promote warmth and circulation.

Summer Heat (暑, shǔ):

Summer heat is a unique TCM concept that refers to the heat and humidity typically experienced during the summer months. It can lead to symptoms like fever, dehydration, dizziness, and fatigue, and is often associated with heat stroke and heat exhaustion. For skin diseases, it is primarily related to sunburns. TCM treatments for summer heat-related skin diseases aim to clear excess heat from the body, reduce inflammation, and promote fluid balance to allow the body to heal.

Treating the Root Cause of Skin Conditions @ Joy TCM Clinic
After determining the specific imbalance underlying the condition, our experienced physician Joy will create a treatment course to address it. Let’s take eczema for example. Eczema may be caused by many imbalances, with heat being the most common. The goal is to determine the type of heat, strength of the imbalance, and the presence of wind or dampness to create the correct treatment. This is done through looking at the skin, taking a medical history, and observing the pulse and tongue.

For blood heat with wind, herbs that reduce both blood heat and wind would be prescribed. But if there is more dampness, we would use herbs for damp heat. If it is a very strong flare then heat toxicity herbs would need to be used to reduce the heat toxins. Once you remove the toxins the body’s natural healing ability can return and to return to a state of balance.

The TCM therapeutic principle works by clearing away the heat and dampness through bowels, urine and skin; by expelling wind and detoxifying the body, as well as moistening the dryness and nourishing the Blood.

A combination of acupuncture treatment, external applications and the intake of herbal medication can bring about relief.
