What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that happens when your blood sugar (glucose) is too high. It develops when your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or any at all, or when your body isn’t responding to the effects of insulin properly. Diabetes affects people of all ages. Most forms of diabetes are chronic (lifelong), and all forms are manageable with medications and/or lifestyle changes.

Glucose (sugar) mainly comes from carbohydrates in your food and drinks. It’s your body’s go-to source of energy. Your blood carries glucose to all your body’s cells to use for energy.

Most adults need about seven to eight hours of sleep each night to feel alert and well-rested during the day. Failing to get enough sleep can have a severe effect on your health and performance. If you have noticed any of the following signs, you may need more sleep:

1. You are dependent on an alarm clock. If you are getting enough sleep, you should be able to wake up on time without a morning alarm. Hitting the snooze button a couple of times before getting up is a clear sign of sleep deprivation.
2. You are drowsy driving. Falling asleep at the wheel is a sure sign that you are too tired. It’s also dangerous – drowsy driving is a common cause of deadly auto accidents.
3. You rely on caffeine to get through the day. A cup of coffee to start your day is fine, but you should not have to drink caffeine all day to stay awake and alert.
4.You are making mistakes. When you are tired, focus and concentration can be difficult. You may be easily distracted and less likely to catch and fix errors.
5. You are forgetful. Sleep deprivation hinders short-term memory, which may explain difficulty remembering things.
6. You are cranky, snippy, and irritable. Being tired can have a negative effect on your mood. You are more likely to feel depressed, anxious or frustrated when you have not received enough sleep.
7. You are frequently getting sick. Your immune system is not at full strength without sleep. Your body may have difficulty fighting illness.
