Have you ever noticed that sometimes your reaction feels much bigger than the situation itself?
A comment from a colleague, a difficult conversation, someone raising their voice, or a piece of feedback. On the surface, it may seem like a small thing. Yet hours later, you are still thinking about it. Your body feels tense, your mind keeps replaying the conversation, and you find it difficult to fully relax.
Often, it isn’t just about what happened in that moment. Sometimes our reactions are connected to older experiences, unmet emotional needs, or patterns we learned long ago to help us feel safe and protected.
Over time, these protective patterns can become so familiar that we stop noticing them. We keep functioning, showing up, and doing what needs to be done, yet underneath there may be a part of us that is simply tired of carrying the same fears, staying on guard, or holding everything together.
One of the most hopeful things about healing is realizing that these patterns are not fixed. When we bring awareness, compassion, and curiosity to them, something begins to shift. Not because we force ourselves to change, but because we start listening to what our body and emotions have been trying to tell us all along.
Healing, in my experience, is rarely about becoming someone new. It is often about gently returning to ourselves.
Have you ever noticed a situation where your reaction felt bigger than the event itself? I’d love to hear your reflections.
