Let's clear up a major misconception:

Men absolutely need to be aware of hereditary cancer genes. 🧬

Myth: Men are off the hook when it comes to inherited cancer risk.

Fact: Men can carry genetic changes that significantly increase their risk for cancers, such as male breast cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, and others.

They can also pass these genetic changes on to their children. Knowledge is power. Talk to a genetic counsellor to find out more. 🧬

Misconception: Hereditary cancer testing is only for breast or ovarian cancer.

Reality: Certain inherited genetic changes are associated with a higher risk of different cancers such as colorectal, prostate, pancreatic, stomach, and uterine cancers — among others.

Hereditary cancer is more than one disease, and testing can help identify risks early for individuals and families. Talk to a genetic counsellor to find out more. 🧬

On 31st March 2026, our Family Physician, Dr Caron Sak, represented the Centre For Genomic Health (CFGH), as a speaker as well as a panelist, at a lunch time talk organized exclusively for high-net-worth clients from UBS in collaboration with the launch of IHH Priority One service ✨

Dr Caron’s talk focused on genetic testing 🧪 and how it fits in as part of a health portfolio 💼❤️. Together with Dr. Tan Min Han (Lucence), Dr. Kristine Xie (Parkway Shenton) and moderated by Mr. Wayne Gordon (UBS Global Wealth), there was also a lively panel discussion 🎤💬 to explore how early detection and genetic awareness can empower clients to take charge 💪 of their long-term health and improve healthspan 🌟.

Misconception: A “negative” genetic test means I have no cancer risk.

Reality: A negative result doesn’t mean zero risk — especially if there’s a strong family history.

It simply means no known genetic changes (or mutations) were found with current testing technology and knowledge.

Some people have cancer due to factors we can’t detect yet:
* Chance clustering of sporadic cases in families
* Lower-penetrance genetic factors
* Shared environment
* Or a combination of these

Genetic testing is powerful — but it’s not a guarantee. Talk to a genetic counsellor to find out more. 🧬

Misconception: All genetic tests are the same.

Reality: Genetic tests differ in scope — from single-gene tests to multi-gene panels and whole exome/genome sequencing.

Results are interpreted through careful variant classification:
* Pathogenic / Likely pathogenic
* Benign / Likely benign
* Variant of Uncertain Significance (VUS)

Not all results mean the same thing — and not all tests answer the same question. Talk to a genetic counsellor to find out more. 🧬

Tumour ≠ Germline.

Tumour testing finds mutations in the cancer.
Germline testing finds inherited changes present in every cell.
Both valuable. Just not the same.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT) – one of the most common inherited neurological disorders that affects the peripheral nerves and causes muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and difficulty with movement. 💙

🧬 What is Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT)? CMT is a group of genetic disorders that affect the peripheral nervous system, which controls movement and sensation in the arms and legs. It can lead to:
• Muscle weakness in the feet, legs, hands, and arms
• Loss of sensation or numbness, especially in the feet and hands
• Foot deformities like high arches or hammertoes
• Balance and coordination problems

⚡ The Genetic Cause: CMT is caused by mutations in specific genes that produce proteins essential for the normal functioning of peripheral nerves. These mutations can be inherited in different ways, including autosomal dominant or X-linked recessive inheritance patterns, meaning it can run in families.

🧬 Genetic Counseling & CMT:
• Early diagnosis: If you or a loved one have a family history of CMT, genetic testing and counseling can help provide a diagnosis, identify the genetic mutation involved, and guide management and treatment options.
• Informed decisions: Genetic counseling can also help understand the risks for family members and guide decisions about family planning.

💬 If you’re living with CMT or have a family history, connecting with a genetic counselor can provide valuable support to better understand your condition and take proactive steps to manage it.

💙 Let’s spread awareness and support individuals and families affected by Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease! Together, we can make a difference. 🌟
