When Spiritual Practice Has No Accountability: Why Lineage Matters

Recent spiritual fraud cases in China raise an important question: Who is accountable for the practitioner?

Spirituality itself is not the problem. The danger begins when fear, manipulation and financial exploitation are used to sell healing, fortune-changing or supernatural solutions.

Authorities have reported cases involving people who claimed to be spiritual masters, Taoists or energy practitioners. Victims were allegedly frightened with claims about ghosts, curses, shortened lives, karma or family disasters, then pressured to pay for expensive rituals or services.

Other investigations involved “spiritual training” organisations accused of using psychological manipulation, closed environments, escalating fees and dependency to exploit members.

These cases do not prove that every spiritual teacher or energy healer is fraudulent. But they show why accountability matters.

Anyone can create a social-media account and call themselves a:

“Grandmaster.”
“Energy Master.”
“Quantum Healer.”
“Spiritual Mentor.”
“Divine Channel.”

But titles prove very little.

Who trained them?
Who authorised them to teach?
What tradition do they represent?
What ethical standards do they follow?
Who can correct or discipline them?

This is where traditional lineage—传承—still matters.

传承 means transmission: teachings passed through recognised teachers and traditions. Genuine transmission should include not only techniques, but also ethics, boundaries and responsibility.

A trustworthy lineage can provide:

* Traceability
* Standards
* Ethical guidance
* Supervision
* Clear boundaries
* Responsibility toward students and the public

However, claiming a lineage is not enough. A title, robe or religious affiliation does not automatically prove authenticity. Lineage should be verifiable—and it must never be used to excuse misconduct.

No practitioner should frighten people with invented curses, illnesses, entities or disasters in order to make money. No spiritual title justifies manipulation or guaranteed supernatural promises.

Freedom in spirituality can encourage creativity, but freedom without accountability creates risk. If a practitioner becomes their own highest authority, who can tell them when they are wrong?

Responsible spiritual practice should be built on:

Authentic transmission.
Verifiable lineage.
Ethical conduct.
Transparent fees.
No fear-based selling.
No exploitation of vulnerable people.
No guaranteed supernatural outcomes.
Respect for medicine, psychology and the law.

传承 is not about restricting us. It reminds us who we represent.

When we receive teachings through a lineage, our actions reflect our teachers, our tradition and the generations before us.

That is why lineage is both an honour and a responsibility.

Tradition without ethics becomes empty ritual.
Freedom without accountability can become exploitation.
Authentic lineage, ethical conduct and responsible practice protect both practitioners and the people they serve.

FMD Studio Singapore Introduces Reiki Healing Training for Personal Trainers

FMD Studio Singapore is preparing to introduce a specialised Reiki Healing programme designed specifically for Personal Trainers, combining traditional Reiki practice with the modern fitness and wellness environment.

This will be an intensive 3-month training programme conducted over 12 full training days, allowing Personal Trainers sufficient time to learn, practise and progressively develop their Reiki skills alongside their existing fitness knowledge.

The programme will cover Reiki from foundational practice through advanced and Master-level training, with particular emphasis on how Reiki may complement areas such as Cardio, Strength Training, exercise recovery, relaxation, body awareness, mental focus and overall wellness.

To maintain training standards, participants will be required to complete 3 examinations during the programme. These assessments will evaluate their knowledge, practical Reiki abilities, professional application and understanding of responsible Reiki practice.

Personal Trainers who successfully complete the full 12-day programme and pass all 3 examinations will receive FMD Studio certification and may use the designation:

“Reiki Master”

on their name card and professional profile in relation to their Reiki qualification from FMD Studio.

The objective is to develop a new generation of fitness professionals who can bring together physical training, recovery, mindfulness and Reiki practice—providing their clients with a broader holistic wellness experience.
