Did you know that 1 in 9 Singaporeans is affected by diabetes?

We’ve all heard the usual advice: "eat less sugar, cut down on carbs, avoid sweet drinks" ... but let’s be real, that’s tough when eating out is part of our lifestyle here! πŸ˜…

So instead of just saying "eat less," here are 3 simple habits you can start doing today to help keep your blood sugar levels in check, even if you you can't control how your meals are cooked!

πŸ’ͺ 1. Move Before You Eat
Even a short walk or light workout before your meal can reduce sugar spikes. Studies show that exercising before eating helps your body manage blood sugar better. So next time, try squeezing in a gym session or brisk walk before dinner!

πŸ₯¦ 2. Eat Your Veggies First
Fiber slows down sugar absorption. Starting your meals with vegetables especially leaves and stalks, helps to reduce sugar spikes. Think of it as a natural way to buffer your body from that rice or dessert coming later! πŸ₯—

πŸ’§ 3. Hydrate Smartly
Not drinking enough water has been linked to higher risks of diabetes. Swap that sweet drink for plain water, and check your urine color. It should be light yellow. Staying hydrated keeps your body functioning properly!

1 in 3 Singaporeans aged 18–74 are at risk of hypertension.

In our vibrant food paradise, it’s easy to turn to comforting (but unhealthy) eats β€” think carb-loaded meals, salty snacks, and sugary drinks. Combine that with a fast-paced, high-stress lifestyle… and it’s no surprise our blood pressure is feeling the pressure too.

But here’s the good news: Hypertension can be managed with consistent healthy habits:

Get moving πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ β€” Regular exercise supports cardiovascular health

Maintain a healthy body composition βš–οΈ β€” More muscle, less visceral fat

Prioritise sleep πŸ›Œ β€” Stick to consistent sleep and wake times

Manage stress πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ β€” Find routines that help you decompress

One of my new clients asked me this recently, and apparently that was her idea of weight loss the whole time and it made her not stay consistent because she equated it to suffering. πŸ˜”

But, that's not how I view it. Because if maintaining a healthy body composition is just suffering then wouldn't it be not worth the price to look good but be unhappy? πŸ€”

Here's a summary my reply to her!

1. Exercise is not purely about energy expenditure. Exercise is important for improving cardiovascular health and combat against ageing and lowered mobility. When it comes to weight loss exercise play quite a small role in our total energy expenditure. But it's still important to do it to keep our body healthy and also improve our basal metabolic rates which then in turn helps with fat loss and more importantly muscle building. πŸ’ͺ

2. Being hungry is NOT the key to weight loss. Being constantly hungry is not sustainable and shouldn't be the solution for sustainable weight loss. The idea is to cut out things that spike our blood glucose levels and are too caloric dense while REPLACING them with more nutritious alternatives like proteins or alternatives that have a better glycemic index (GI) so it helps our metabolic health. ❀️

3. Enjoy the journey! Having a body you love should love you back as well! A healthy body also requires a healthy mind. Instead of just following what achieves fast effective results, work on improving your day to day activities such that it's sustainable and rewarding to make healthy choices! πŸŽ‰
