What I Noticed — On Being “I”

I came back from my ancestral pilgrimage in Japan recently.

For the longest time, I think I was trying to be “Japanese” — or rather, what I had constructed in my mind as being Japanese.

It was tiring.

Perhaps because of that, I had avoided this country for such a long time.

This time around, I was just “I.”

I stopped trying to be something.

I reconnected with relatives, met many people along the way, and somehow, through these encounters, I realised that it was me who had closed my heart — not the other way around.

I had spent so much time agonising about being “different” that I had created a boundary around myself.

Maybe this comes with age, but life feels too short now to live according to someone else's expectations or image of me.

This time, I simply came as I am.

And strangely, I felt welcomed by this land.

I don't need to prove that I belong.
I don't need to prove that I don't.

I can simply be here, as I am.

Perhaps that, too, is a kind of home.

Not everything that grows asks for our attention.

Ripening

Some things become ready in their own time.

This gathering is an invitation to pause, listen, and notice what has quietly matured beneath the surface of everyday life.

At the beginning of the afternoon, each participant will choose a fruit.

We return to it only after the sound journey.

What can I trust to continue unfolding in its own time?

It seems to me that July and August are the months when the sky, the earth, and our energy all become more intense.

I've been hearing from many people that life has been taking unexpected turns.

Although these changes may seem sudden, I don't think they really are.

Everything changes every day.
Every hour.
Every minute.
Every second.

Sometimes we only notice it when the wave becomes big enough.

Perhaps all we can do is surrender with a little more grace, trusting that another wave will eventually carry us forward again.

From 20 July to 3 August, I'll be in Japan, visiting families and anscetral land and stepping away from the digital world for a while.

During this period, I'll be on a digital detox and won't be checking emails or messages. I'll reply when I return.

I'm looking forward to coming back with fresh eyes and an open heart.

What I Noticed — On Paying Attention

Recently, we changed the window in our house.

A strong wind blew into the room, and a large painting fell from my bookshelf. It hit one of my plant pots and shattered it into pieces.

I bought a new pot immediately.

A few weeks later, I noticed the plant was slowly dying.

When I looked more closely, I found that the roots had started to rot.

The new pot wasn't breathable.

I hadn't noticed.

For five years, this plant had been healthy.

At first, it felt like a sudden death.

But then I realised—

perhaps there is no such thing as a sudden change.

Sometimes, I simply wasn't paying enough attention.

I was physically there,
but I wasn't really there for the plant.

The plant didn't suddenly change.

It had been telling me,
little by little.

I just wasn't listening.

Now I see it.

I'm back.

This July, I'm holding a few quiet spaces before taking a short pause.

From 20 July to 3 August, I'll be in Japan, saying hello to my anscestors and stepping away from the digital world for a while.

During this period, I'll be on a digital detox and won't be checking emails or messages. I'll reply when I return.

If you've been meaning to join me before then, I would love to see you before 20th Jul.

If not, I will see you in August!

Not everything that guides us can be seen.

Beneath the plans, beneath the deadlines, beneath the noise—what matters most for the months ahead?

The Current Beneath is a gathering of sound, reflection, and quiet companionship.

Together, we pause long enough to listen for the currents already shaping our lives.

At the close of the session, each participant will create a series of handwritten messages that will be shared anonymously over the remaining months of the year.

Small reminders that continue travelling long after the gathering has ended.
