In the blink of an eye, we’ve entered the second half of the year, which means we are THAT much closer to ST Week 2026! Even though it is still a while away, the SALTS team has already got some ideas up our sleeves and we are excited to get everyone on board!

The theme for this year is Intentional Conversations, Meaningful Connections. It is a celebration of the relationships that shape our profession and the people we journey with every day. Beyond therapy sessions and clinical outcomes, speech therapy is built on trust, collaboration, and genuine human connection.

This theme highlights the importance of fostering stronger bonds — between speech therapists and patients, colleagues across hospitals and institutions, paediatric and adult services, and caregivers and families who play an essential role in every journey. It reminds us that meaningful care extends beyond individual settings and specialties, creating a connected community that supports, learns from, and uplifts one another.

Progress with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) isn’t always straightforward. 📈📉📈

It can take countless of trials and errors, plenty of practice, and a whole team of people working together — from therapists and caregivers to teachers and other communication partners.

So what does progress with AAC really look like? And if someone could benefit from AAC support, how can they access it at SPD? 🤔

In Part 2 of our SALTS Insider feature, SPD’s speech and language therapists take us behind the scenes of the AAC journey — sharing the challenges, lessons and small breakthroughs along the way, as well as the different referral pathways available at SPD.

Because when it comes to AAC, progress really does take a village. 𐀪𐀪𐀪𐀪𐀪

“I want to eat bugs.” 🐛 That’s what one child told her speech therapist through her AAC device — and it turned into a giggly, back-and-forth chat about eating toy buses too. 😄
At SPD, speech and language therapists use AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) to help children and adults find their voice — not just to ask for things, but to joke, connect, and be silly. Because communication isn’t only functional — it’s about being heard, in every sense. 💬✨
