We were honoured attend the Pei Hwa Foundation 36th Anniversary Charity Day 2026 this afternoon.

This year, 49 charities and community organisations received funding support, and SPD is grateful to be among the beneficiaries.

The work of charities is only possible because of the generosity and trust of donors, foundations, volunteers, and community partners who believe in creating a more inclusive society. Every contribution helps to create opportunities and empower lives.

A heartfelt thank you to the Pei Hwa Foundation for your continued support and commitment to the social service sector. We are deeply appreciative of your partnership and confidence in our mission.

Does positive discipline mean letting children “get away” with misbehaviour?

Parenting does not come with a manual. For many parents, this familiar saying resonates deeply. When children act out, be it refusing to listen, throwing a tantrum, or pushing boundary, parents are often left at their wits’ end. However, growing research in child development offers a new perspective, highlighting positive discipline as a more compassionate and effective way to manage children’s behaviour.

SPD psychologist Amanda Chew shares how positive discipline can lead to better outcomes for both parents and children.

“What was the worst thing you said to yourself?”

After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in her 20s, Cheryl faced significant emotional distress and uncertainty, with moments where she struggled to see a way forward, “I told myself that there is nothing else that I can do anymore.”

But through the steady encouragement of her family and friends, Cheryl rebuilt her confidence and adapted to a new chapter in life with her head held high. Her journey shows how much understanding and simply having people around can shape the way someone navigates difficult moments.

This September, SPD and Samaritans of Singapore Limited (SOS) are coming together for SparkAbility 2026: A Walk for Change, an inaugural charity walk that brings together the disability community and individuals impacted by su***de and emotional crisis in a shared commitment to inclusion, resilience and care.

At its core, SparkAbility seeks to raise awareness and deepen understanding of inclusion and su***de prevention, anchored in the belief that strong, inclusive communities can foster connection, reduce isolation and support individuals before distress escalates into crisis.

Show your support by joining us on 19 September 2026 at The Meadow, Gardens by the Bay, as we walk together to remind one another that no one should journey alone.

"Sometimes, the first step is simply wanting to begin."

Meet Anuja, a Master’s student in Art Therapy at LASALLE College of the Arts, who recently completed her internship with SPD’s Enabling Skills for Life Programme (ESLP) (Living Skills).

Over four months, Anuja conducted weekly one-on-one sessions with our clients, exploring personalised ways to support each individual in engaging at their own pace. Over time, these sessions created opportunities for our clients to build on their strengths, stay with a process, and gradually extend what they could do, making their capabilities more visible in their own way.

Watch as Anuja shares more about her experience alongside Terance, who has speech and mobility challenges. 🧡

Friendly competition, shared laughter and a celebration of inclusion through boccia 🥳

ESH@Punggol partnered with St Luke's ElderCare (SLEC) for our first intergenerational boccia game last month!

Held at One Punggol’s Celebration Square, the activity brought together our clients with disabilities and seniors from SLEC through sport, shared experiences and plenty of friendly competition in a warm and welcoming environment. It was heartening to see participants cheering one another on, celebrating every successful throw and simply enjoying each other’s company.

While ESH@Punggol and SLEC support different groups within the community, working together can create intergenerational spaces that strengthen family bonds and support residents more holistically. Through activities like these, we hope to encourage persons with disabilities and seniors to stay active, revitalise their energy, remain socially connected and support one another within the community.

We look forward to making this a recurring activity and continuing to build a more inclusive and connected community in Punggol together 🧡

Working mothers are often described as “multi-taskers” who move seamlessly from meetings to preparing family meals, from presentations to parent-teacher meetings. But the reality is more layered than that. It is not simply about doing more things, but about carrying the weight of countless small decisions each day while trying to show up fully at work and at home. Leaving behind a sick child with another caregiver while honouring work commitments is never easy.

At SPD’s recent Organisational Excellence Day 2026, Board director and Vice-Chairperson of SPD’s Services Committee Dr May Lim shared her reflections on leadership, excellence and motherhood. An occupational therapist by training and Associate Professor and Assistant Provost (Applied Learning) at the Singapore Institute of Technology, Dr Lim has also mentored many occupational therapists over the years, including several currently serving at SPD.

Inspired by and featuring excerpts from Dr Lim’s speech, this article explores the realities of motherhood, leadership and striving for excellence in everyday life. 🧡

“When Elden entered puberty, he began to struggle with sleeping, and there were nights when he would not sleep at all. He would scream so loudly that it was piercing to my ears. This lasted for nine years.”

A mother of two, Mdm Goh has been caring for her eldest son Elden, who is on the autism spectrum and has mobility challenges, largely on her own since her husband passed away.

From helping Elden in and out of his wheelchair, to supporting his daily routines and staying by his side through sleepless nights, caregiving became Mdm Goh’s everyday life. It was exhausting, physically and emotionally, but she kept going because she wanted the best for her children.

Over time, Mdm Goh realised that caregivers do not have to carry everything alone. Asking for help did not mean she loved her son any less. Instead, it gave her space to rest, care for her own health, and continue being there for him in the long run.
Through SPD’s Take-A-Break Programme, Mdm Goh now has support during hospital visits and moments when she needs time to recharge, knowing Elden is well cared for by professionals.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate mothers and caregivers like Mdm Goh, and want to remind fellow caregivers that it is okay to lean on support and community. You do not have to walk the journey alone. 🧡

Unfiltered. Unprompted. Pure love for mums. 🧡

We sat down with some of our children at SPD@Kembangan early intervention centre to talk about their mums. The result? Sweet moments and some very honest answers. ☺️

At SPD, we celebrate every form of communication. Because whether it’s a sentence, a blown kiss, or a simple smile, the message is the same - "I love you, mum". Every mother-child relationship is unique, and we wanted to share that beautiful diversity.

To all mums and motherly figures, here’s wishing you a Happy Mother’s Day!

OK, now drop a 🧡 in the comments section and go give your mum a hug ☺️
