People will always have something to say about what you can or can’t do.

“You’re too old for the gym.”
“You’re not strong enough.”
“You won’t be able to do that.”

Then there are the people who tell you the opposite: the ones who tell you to keep going, the ones who recognise your efforts and progress.

Both types of comments can stick with you for years.

The question is, which ones are you going to let define you?

We love to talk about “fitness”, but…

Are we actually thinking about the same thing?

It can mean lifting heavy, running fast, being flexible, having visible abs, hitting a certain number on your watch… the list goes on and on.

And because there are so many ways to be “fit”, it’s easy to end up chasing things just because they’re what fitness culture tells us we should be chasing. You might be training harder than ever and still not be getting better at the things you actually care about.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to run faster, lift heavier, move better, or improve your numbers.

But maybe your goal is to keep up on a long holiday, carry your own luggage, play with your kids, or simply feel good in your body as you get older.

There’s no right way to be fit, just one that feels right for you.

There’s a certain confidence that comes from feeling capable in your own body.

Being able to move well, handle more and trust your own strength.

That’s something you can keep building at any age.

You can continue challenging yourself even as you get older.

You can still learn new movements. You can still improve your technique. You can still surprise yourself with what your body can do.

And we love being there for those moments: helping our students learn, push themselves and see what they’re capable of.

This is Episode 2. 💛

“Can I just train once a week?”

Yes, that’s a valid question for busy Singaporean adults. Work, family, travel, other commitments… sometimes one session is all you can fit in.

And yes, one session is better than none. Doing something for your health is always better than doing nothing.

But if you want to build and maintain strength, especially as you get older, you’ll need a bit more stimulus than that. Research found that for most adults, twice a week is a pretty good sweet spot.

So you don’t need to live in the gym, but your still body needs enough training stimulus to adapt, with enough recovery to do it again.

Even though getting older is something we all have to accept, losing strength and ability doesn’t have to be.

Strength training can help you stay capable of the things you enjoy, whether that’s travelling, playing sports, keeping up with the family, or simply feeling comfortable in your own body.

You can’t stop the years passing, but you can do something about how you move through them.

This is the same trick supermarkets use on you, except it could be your own kitchen doing it.

Chips on your table, chocolates in your room... You may think you’re choosing to eat them, but sometimes you might be mindlessly consuming them just because they’re right there.

You don’t need more discipline or self-control. You just need to stop making the bad option the easy one.

Put it out of sight. Put it somewhere difficult and intentional to get to. Keep fruits or something better within arm’s reach instead, so when your body is on autopilot, the easy choice is also the right one. That’s when it counts most.

Your workout does not need to destroy you to change you.

Yes, training should challenge you.
Yes, you should do your best.

But feeling miserable, completely exhausted or dreading your next session does not mean your workout is more effective.

Results do not come from how much you suffer.
They come from giving your body enough challenge to improve and continuing to show up.

A workout you enjoy and can sustain will do far more for you than a brutal workout you eventually quit.

Because the goal is not to force yourself through the next 12 weeks.
It is to find a way of training you enjoy, look forward to and can keep returning to year after year.

Getting fit is one thing.
Staying fit for life is what truly matters.

Sometimes, this is what truly pains my heart.

We meet so many people in their 50s, 60s and 70s who have spent their lives building their careers, raising their children and sacrificing for their families.

They gave so much of themselves to care for everyone around them. Somewhere along the way, their own health kept being placed last.

By the time they come to us, the years of putting themselves aside have often caught up with them. Their strength and mobility have declined, and everyday things are no longer as easy as they once were.

Now that they have fulfilled their responsibilities, this should be their time to enjoy retirement, their families and the fruits of everything they worked so hard for.

Instead, many spend these years battling pain, chronic health conditions and mobility issues.

It pains me because I know how much they have given,
not only their time and energy, but sometimes their health too.

That is why, at Vigeo, we are so passionate about helping seniors become stronger, improve their health and live better for the rest of their lives.

When our students send us photographs from their travels, share moments with their families or tell us they can finally do something they were no longer able to do, it fills our hearts with joy.

Because training was never only about exercise.

It is about helping people to live a better life.
