Emerging studies suggest that GLP-1 receptor agonists may be associated with a lower risk of some obesity-related cancers, possibly through their effects on weight, insulin resistance, inflammation and overall metabolic health.
But the key word is associated.
Most of the current evidence is observational, which means it does not prove that GLP-1 medications directly prevent cancer or slow cancer spread. More research is still needed.
In this video, Dr Siew explains the emerging evidence, what it may mean, and why we need to interpret the findings carefully.
GLP-1 treatment should only be considered after proper medical assessment, and should not be seen as a cancer prevention treatment.
