Ever since the pandemic 😷 has hit, mental health issues have been on the rise with all-time highs in depression and anxiety rates 😔 Both are multifactorial conditions which are caused by a combination of genetic 🧬and environmental 🌳 factors.

Did you know that there are strong links 🤝 between our lifestyle and mental health. Some factors which are known to contribute to anxiety and depression include:
- Unhealthy diet and nutritional deficiencies 🍔
- Lack of physical exercise 📺
- Smoking and alcohol 🚬

Let’s explore these in further detail. In today’s day, most diets are composed of highly processed foods 🌭 which are rich in carbs and deficient in many micro and macro nutrients essential for complete health and wellbeing. Nutrient deficiencies such as vitamin D and B12 are linked to poorer mental health. Mothers who consume unhealthy diets during pregnancy 🤰 were more likely to have children with mental health issues. Thus, diet in all times of life is imperative in regulating mental health 🤗 (Continuation on comments)

Let’s talk about why you may need to incorporate probiotics such as Saccharomyces Boulardii into your diet. If you have digestive problems and frequent infections and you don’t know how to manage them, let us help you out with your health.

Klaire Labs is a reputable brand that produces high-quality probiotic supplements, including Saccharomyces Boulardii.

This probiotic supplement contains the yeast strain Saccharomyces boulardii. This yeast is a type of probiotic that can help to support digestive health and improve gut microbiome diversity.

Saccharomyces Boulardii is known as a miracle yeast for human health helping with various health concerns including digestive health and low immunity.

Its health benefits include:
- Supporting digestive health: Saccharomyces Boulardii has been shown to help support digestive health by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut and reducing the growth of harmful bacteria.

- Managing diarrhoea: It is very effective in reducing the duration and severity of antibiotic-induced diarrhoea. Most antibiotics are associated with the onset of nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Saccharomyces Boulardii improves all of these symptoms.

- Improving gut immunity: Studies have shown that Saccharomyces Boulardii improves gut immunity by producing antibodies which help fight off the infection.

- Managing Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): IBD such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease is prevalent in Singapore and it’s very hard to manage the symptoms. Saccharomyces Boulardii produces an anti-inflammatory effect which helps manage the pain, diarrhoea and other symptoms associated with ulcerative colitis.

- Supporting overall health: Saccharomyces Boulardii can also help to support overall health by improving gut microbiome diversity, reducing oxidative stress, and supporting a healthy immune system.

Sleep hygiene is crucial for our overall health and well-being. It refers to the habits and practices that promote good sleep and helps ensure that we get the rest we need to function at our best.

Lack of sleep or poor sleep hygiene can lead to sleep disorders and other health problems such as insomnia, fatigue, and decreased cognitive function. This, in turn, can affect our physical and mental performance and decrease our overall quality of life.

In contrast, good sleep hygiene can help improve the quality and duration of our sleep, leading to improved physical and mental performance. It can also support the healing process by providing the rest and rejuvenation necessary for our bodies to repair and recharge.

We take sleep hygiene as the basis for a holistic approach to medicine. Our holistic approach to healing takes into account how sleep is unquestionably vital to health and wellness. By improving sleep hygiene you can improve your cognitive function, reduce the risk of conditions such as heart disease, hypertension and other chronic conditions, and have a healthier body and mind.

Dr Gupta may suggest to use Melatonin SRT™ for better sleep hygiene for some people.

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced in the body that helps regulate our sleep-wake cycle. This hormone is released in response to darkness and signals to our bodies that it is time to sleep. As we age, our bodies may produce less melatonin, making it more difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Melatonin SRT™ may work for better sleep hygiene for some people due to the key function of a sustained released.

Supplementing with melatonin can help improve sleep quality, particularly for individuals who have trouble falling asleep or suffer from insomnia. Melatonin works by resetting the body's internal clock and promoting feelings of drowsiness, allowing you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Additionally, melatonin has a calming effect on the body, reducing stress and promoting relaxation, further supporting a good night's sleep.

This is not medical advice. Always consult your healthcare practitioner before making any health related decisions.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in maintaining good health. Despite its importance, many people in 2023 are deficient in this mineral. Here are some of the powerful perks of magnesium and why so many people are deficient.

Supports Bone Health: Magnesium is essential for the formation and maintenance of strong bones. It helps regulate calcium levels, which is important for preventing osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases.

Promotes Heart Health: Magnesium helps regulate heart rhythm, blood pressure and prevents blood clots. It also helps lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular problems.

Improves Sleep: Magnesium is known for its calming and relaxing effects, which can help improve sleep. It also helps regulate melatonin levels, the hormone that regulates sleep.

Boosts Energy: Magnesium is involved in energy production, helping to convert food into energy. This makes it an important mineral for people who lead an active lifestyle.

Reduces Stress: Magnesium has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels. It works by balancing neurotransmitters, which are the chemicals in the brain that regulate mood. (Continued in comments section)

Root cause medicine is all about getting to the root of the problem. It’s a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying the underlying causes of a health issue, instead of just treating the symptoms. By taking this approach, healthcare providers can provide targeted and effective protocol, while also empowering patients to take an active role in their own health.

Why root-cause medicine is important:

Addresses the root cause, not just symptoms! Firstly, by addressing the root causes of disease, root cause medicine allows healthcare providers to develop targeted and effective treatments that address the underlying issue. This leads to improved health outcomes and reduces the risk of developing additional health problems in the future.

Emphasises preventative care! Secondly, root cause medicine also places a strong emphasis on preventative care, which is critical to maintaining good health. By addressing the root causes of disease, healthcare providers can help prevent the development of future health problems and promote long-term health and wellness.

Looks at the whole person (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual health)! Another important aspect of root cause medicine is its focus on the whole person. This approach recognizes that health is not just about physical well-being, but also includes mental, emotional, and spiritual health. By taking a holistic approach to healthcare, root cause medicine can provide a comprehensive approach to health and wellness that addresses the whole person.

Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression that occur without alterations to the underlying DNA sequence. It has been widely accepted that epigenetic changes are influenced by various environmental and lifestyle factors, including diet, exercise, stress levels, and exposure to toxins.

Coined by Dr Bruce Lipton, “Epigenetics” is now recognised as a key factor as to why you are the way you are.

It’s like the saying that “DNA loads the gun but your lifestyle pulls the trigger”. Lifestyle choices have a profound impact on gene expression and overall health. For example, a diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can lead to epigenetic changes that increase the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats can help promote healthy gene expression and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

Here are Nutranourish, we take in account these epigenetic changes that influence your health. Holistic health and mindfulness practices, such as meditation, yoga, and regular exercise, can also play a significant role in promoting healthy gene expression and overall wellbeing. For example, regular exercise has been shown to improve epigenetic marks associated with cardiovascular health, while mindfulness practices can help reduce stress and improve mental health.

Plant based diets 🥗 are becoming more popular within our society compared to previous years with more and more people opting to try vegetarian and vegan meals.

Although these diets have benefits, they can lead to significant nutrient deficiencies if someone jumps into following plant based diets without proper research first.

Vitamin B12 is one such nutrient that needs to be considered. It is a vitamin made by microorganisms 🧫 and not produced by plants 🌱 and approximately 2.4micrograms should be consumed daily. It is essential for many important functions including:

- Red blood cell development 🩸
- DNA production 🧬
- Metabolise homocysteine
- Nervous system regulation 🧠
- Prevention of birth defects 🤰
- Bone health 🦴
- Improvement of mood 😁
- Energy production ⚡️
- Health of hair, skin and nails 💅

Since plant based foods generally do not contain vitamin B12, it is essential those following these diets consume either foods fortified with vitamin B12 or take supplements 💊 Examples of foods fortified with vitamin B12 include some:

- Milks 🥛
- Cereals 🥣
- Nutritional yeasts

It is also essential to consume an appropriate amount of fortified foods to receive the recommended daily dose of vitamin B12. In terms of supplements, it is highly advised to speak to a health professional 👩‍⚕️ first and perhaps have a blood test 🩸 done for vitamin B12 before starting them. The best biomarker to check for B12 deficiency in checking for methylmalonic acid as serum B12 alone does not reveal intracellular adequacy. At NutraNourish, we check for MMA for our patients with fatigue, palpitations, headache etc.

In this day and age, we have a surplus of available vitamins and supplements. Vitamin B, one of the more popular available supplements, can actually come in various types, one of which is B7.

Biotin, or vitamin B7, is a water-soluble B vitamin essential for the function of certain enzymes and plays an important role in several metabolic processes in the body. It has gained its popularity in promoting healthier hair and nails due to its function in protein synthesis, specifically in keratin production. Although biotin deficiency is not as common, it may present with hair loss, skin or nail problems, or scaly skin rashes. There is a higher risk for this if in conjunction with alcoholism, due to the decreased absorption of this vitamin, in addition to other nutrients.

The recommended daily adequate intake for adults is 30 μg/day, and is typically met by healthy individuals through the consumption of a well-balanced diet. In addition to this, human gut bacteria are capable of producing biotin. Foods rich in biotin include nuts, whole grains, egg yolk, as well as legumes. Although a regular western diet would already provide around 35 to 70 μg/day, supplementation may help to meet the requirement in some, without any major toxicities being reported.

In recent years, there has been a surge of a ‘bigger is better’ mindset, especially when it comes to beauty, such as an aesthetic favour towards large breasts and buttocks. We are indirectly influenced by influencers, and our perception of fashion changes based on what aligns with the current trend. Although social media and outward influence sets the tone and norm to what is pleasing, it may also come with risks, in addition to spending a ton of money having plastic surgery done.

In addition to the usual risks associated with any surgery – including infection and bleeding – breast implants have a specific condition associated with it, known as breast implant illness. It is a constellation of symptoms that include fatigue, headaches, chills, rash, chronic pain, and even hair loss. In severe cases, it has been called autoimmune/autoinflammatory syndrome due to incompatibility with the silicon implant, leading to autoimmune diseases, immune deficiencies, and finally lymphomas. The US Food and Drug Administration has issued the highest level of caution, also known as black box warning, on the packaging of breast implants, wherein there is a detailed process before getting surgery done. The symptoms suffered vary, and removal of the implants remains to be the most effective method of management for these patients.

Blue light is a type of high energy visible light that is emitted from screens which we commonly utilise, including mobile phones 📱 computers 💻 and televisions 📺 This is important because we rely on technology exponentially more than our ancestors ever did, especially post-COVID🦠 with more and more people working from home🏡 and relying on their devices.

Excessive exposure to blue light can have detrimental impacts on our eyes and lead to:
- Blurry vision 👓
- Headaches 🤕
- Dry eyes 👁️
- Eye pains and fatigue 😫
- Poor sleep quality 😴

In a world 🌎 of inevitable technology usage, there are things we can do to optimise eye👀 health, including consumption of antioxidants such as astaxanthin. It is a powerful antioxidant which can travel straight to the eyes and neutralise harmful molecules such as free radicals 🧪 and protect the retina and macula from sunlight ☀️ and blue light damage. Astaxanthin is great because it can also protect the skin from sunburns 🔥 Some studies also report that astaxanthin can potentially prevent the eye problems listed above.

Dietary consumption of astaxanthin is recommended and some good sources include:
- Crab 🦀
- Lobster 🦞
- Shrimp 🍤
- Fish 🐟
- Red yeast 🧫
- Algae 🪷

Supplements 💊 of astaxanthin are also available but are recommended only after consultation with a health professional 👩‍⚕️

Another measure to prevent excessive blue light exposure is blue light filtering glasses 👓 These are becoming increasingly popular and the blue light coating can be applied to prescription glasses 🤓 making them more convenient.
