😷 Think your surgical mask is enough for the haze? Think again.

Dr Lee Yanqing, Chief Operating Officer at HMI OneCare Clinic, was recently featured on , sharing his medical insights on Singapore’s worsening haze situation and mask-wearing protocols during periods of poor air quality.

With PSI levels reaching the unhealthy range in several regions, haze can be a concern due to fine particulate matter such as PM2.5 — tiny particles that can pe*****te deep into the lungs and affect your health.

Dr Lee shared that when it comes to haze, reducing exposure is more important than simply putting on a surgical mask.

Two people can step off the scale with the same number but walk away with two very different health pictures.

Weight alone doesn't tell you how much of that number is muscle, fat, or water. It doesn't tell you where fat is stored either, and that matters more than most people realise. Fat around the organs (visceral fat) carries a different health risk than fat elsewhere, even at the same total weight.

A body composition analysis breaks this down. Beyond your weight, it looks at muscle mass, fat percentage, visceral fat levels and hydration, giving a clearer picture of what's actually going on beneath the number.

It's part of a routine health screening at HMI Medical Centre, and our doctors can walk you through what your results mean for you. Book a screening in the link to see your own numbers.

😮‍💨 Finding it harder to breathe lately? You’re not alone.

Dr Jonathan Leong Jun Ming, Physician Leader at HMI OneCare Clinic, was recently featured in Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报 to share his medical insights on the increase in respiratory symptoms seen as the haze worsens.

Dr Leong shared that more patients have recently been seeking care for respiratory symptoms, particularly those with asthma and allergic rhinitis. Haze can trigger or worsen symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness, while those with allergic rhinitis may experience more frequent sneezing, runny nose and blocked nose.

Beyond respiratory symptoms, haze can also cause eye irritation and tearing. Children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with existing heart or lung conditions may be more vulnerable to the effects of haze.

💡 What can you do?
When air quality reaches unhealthy levels, reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities and stay hydrated. If you experience persistent breathing difficulties, chest tightness or worsening symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

We talk a lot about "anti-ageing" — but what if the goal isn't to fight ageing at all?

Dr Kong Yan Ling .yl , Consultant Dermatologist from Dermatology Collective explains why skin ageing isn't caused by one thing, and why more dermatologists are shifting focus from correcting visible signs of ageing to preventing them before they start.

When does this actually matter for your routine, which ingredients hold up to scrutiny, and how much of the "longevity" trend is backed by real science?

One creeps in slowly. The other hits you overnight. Here's how to tell influenza from a common cold.

Dr Lee Yanqing, Chief Operating Officer at HMI OneCare Clinic, recently spoke with CNA938 about the rising influenza cases in Singapore, sharing medical insights on how to tell influenza from a common cold, whether haze plays a role, and the warning signs that require medical attention.

Key Takeaways:
🤧 Cold vs. Flu: Common cold symptoms build up gradually with mild sniffles and sneezes. Influenza strikes abruptly with sudden high fevers, heavy body aches, and severe fatigue.
💨 The Haze Factor: Haze is an environmental irritant causing eye, nose, and throat discomfort, but it is not a viral infection and does not cause viral fevers.
🚨 Red-Flag Symptoms: Seek urgent medical care if you or a loved one experience breathing difficulties, chest pain, unusual drowsiness, severe dehydration, or a fever that persistently worsens.
🛡️ Recommended Protective Measures: Stay updated with the annual flu vaccination, wear a mask outdoors, practice personal hygiene, and stay home when you're sick.

Some health risks are masters of disguise — they blend right in until something serious forces them into view.

That's the whole idea behind regular health screenings. A "normal" result today doesn't always tell the full story, especially for conditions that develop quietly over time. Early, consistent checks help catch what's hiding before it becomes harder to manage.

🥵 Sweating more than usual in Singapore’s hot and humid weather? It could be affecting your skin too!

Dr Foo Hui Jun, Assistant Medical Director & Family Physician at HMI OneCare Clinic, was recently featured on 8视界新闻新加坡 8world News to share her medical insights on the rise in sweat-related skin problems seen in GP clinics.

Dr Foo shared that consultations for skin problems linked to sweating have increased by 20–30% over the past two months, with athlete’s foot accounting for about half of these cases.

Hot and humid conditions, prolonged sweating and wearing covered shoes for extended periods can create a warm, moist environment where fungi thrive, increasing the risk of athlete’s foot. Other sweat-related concerns include heat rash, eczema flare-ups and secondary bacterial infections.

💡 What can you do?
Keep your skin clean and dry, change out of damp clothes and socks, and choose breathable clothing and footwear where possible.
If excessive sweating or persistent skin symptoms are affecting your daily life, speak to a GP doctor to find out if further assessment or treatment may be needed.
