When a child walks into a therapy session, we aren’t looking for ‘perfect’ behaviour.

We observe the little things that help us understand how they experience the world.

We notice things like…

🧩Problem-solving
Do they keep trying when something is difficult, or do they give up quickly?

💬Communication
How do they express their needs, ideas or frustrations? Do they use words? Gestures?

💛 Challenges
What happens when something doesn’t go their way? How do they respond?

🤝 Connection
Do they invite others into play? Share their Excitement?

🍃Learning
How do they approach something new? Watch? Copy? Dive straight in?

None of these observations are ‘good’ or ‘bad’. They’re simply clues that help us understand a child’s strengths and identify where they may need support.

That’s why what looks like ‘just playing’ can tell us so much.

A crown. A cape. A superhero mask.

To adults, they might look like dress-up clothes.

To a child, they can become a way of expressing thoughts, feelings, hopes, fears and experiences that are difficult to put into words.

That’s the beauty of play therapy. 💛

Play therapy is a child-centered approach that uses play as a child’s natural language. Through carefully selected toys, imaginative play, art, stories and games, children can explore emotions and experiences in a way that feels safe and developmentally appropriate.

Play therapy can help children who are experiencing:

🌱anxiety or worry
🌱big emotions or frequent meltdowns
🌱low confidence
🌱grief and loss
🌱family changes such as divorce
🌱difficulties with friendships

Sometimes a child doesn’t need more questions.

Sometimes they simply need a safe space to play, knowing someone is there to understand the story they’re telling.

Every child deserves to be heard- even when they don’t have the words.

The best toy in the room isn’t always the newest, flashiest, or most expensive.

It’s often YOU!

When you:
✨ follow your child’s lead
✨ get down on their level
✨ join in their play
✨ share their excitement

you’re helping build language, connection, confidence, and emotional security.

Children learn best through relationships.

So the next time you’re wondering if you have enough toys, activities, or resources...

Remember: your attention is one of the most powerful tools you have. 🥰🥰

Building independence doesn’t mean stepping back completely — it means giving children the confidence to try. 💛

Small language shifts can encourage problem-solving, resilience, and self-belief:

🌱 “What’s your plan?”
→ encourages thinking before acting

🌱 “You can try first.”
→ builds confidence and initiative

🌱 “I’ll help if you need me.”
→ provides support without taking over

🌱 “I wonder how you could do that?”
→ promotes flexible thinking and problem-solving

When children are given opportunities to try, struggle a little, and succeed, they begin to believe:
✨ “I can do hard things.”

Big reactions are often a sign that something underneath feels too big for a child to manage alone. 💛

Sometimes it’s:
😣 frustration
😰 anxiety
😴 exhaustion
🌀 sensory overwhelm
💔 disappointment
🤝 feeling disconnected or misunderstood

Instead of asking:
❌ “How do I stop this behaviour?”

Try wondering:
✨ “What might my child be feeling right now?”
✨ “What happened before this?”
✨ “What does their body need?”

Young children often show emotions through behaviour before they can explain them with words.

In play therapy, we help children safely express those feelings through play, connection, and co-regulation — so the child feels understood, not just corrected.

Peekaboo isn’t just a game.

It builds anticipation, shared attention, and the early foundations of communication.

Simple moments like these are where connection — and language — begin. 🌱

Last week, we shared when correction can interrupt communication.
That doesn’t mean accuracy isn’t important.

This week’s focus is modelling — giving children the correct form naturally, without stopping their message.

Child: “I goed park.”
Adult: “You went to the park.”

Same message. Correct input. No pressure.

Last week, we talked about moments when correcting a child’s speech can interrupt communication.

That doesn’t mean errors don’t matter.

This week’s focus: what to do instead.

As speech therapists, we support learning by:
* providing accurate language models
* responding to the child’s message
* keeping the interaction natural and positive

Example:
Child: “I goed park.”
Adult: “You went to the park.”

Same message. Correct model. No pressure to repeat.

This approach supports language growth without shutting down communication 🌱

It’s natural to want to help your child “say it properly.”
But constant correction can make children hesitant to talk.

✨ Instead of correcting, try modelling:
Child: “Dog runned fast!”
Adult: “Yes! The dog ran fast!”

This keeps communication positive, safe, and flowing — which is where real language growth happens.

Kids don’t need the answer — they need a partner.

This phrase tells them:

💪 You’re capable
🤝 You’re not alone
🧠 We problem-solve as a team

It builds resilience, confidence, and a love of learning—even when something feels hard.
