A cover up I did recently over a mastectomy scar. I’ve always wanted to do work with mastectomy patients, be it realistic ni***es tattoo or customised designs. It’s something close to my heart, I went through a double mastectomy myself last year because of the BRCA2 genetic mutation in my DNA and it was a prophylactic surgery. I feel more should be advocated about it so women can prevent the occurrence of breast cancer rather than treat it when it happens. After carefully considering the options available and doing months of research (which included reading hundreds of stories from cancer survivors on their journey to recovery be it AFC or implants/explants and the aftermath), I decided to go for the AFC (Aesthetic Flat Closure) although I have to admit, I think the surgeons did a beautiful job on her. This client was looking for a female artist specifically. When she showed me her scars and said she hated them, I can understand. I showed her mine. She would never have considered getting a tattoo (ever) if not for the scar. She wasn’t interested in big, ornamental designs. Just something big enough to cover her scar. I understand the struggle with body acceptance after the treatment (which includes surgery). I’ve read hundreds of stories from women who continue to fight a different battle after they recover. The struggle with social norms and unrealistic beauty standards. They try to accept their new body that’s battle worn, tired and trying to rebuild themselves from the ashes of who they once were. Not everyone is into tattoos. She didn’t want ni***es tattooed on her either. I told her the surgeons did an amazing job with her implants (one lady from the support group described her scars as shark attack in a post and I can totally relate 😅😅) so hopefully, the coverup of the scar will give her the confidence to walk out in bikinis again.
