𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗛𝗚 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗴𝘂𝘀 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆

For 57-year-old oesophageal cancer patient Ms Goh Shiow Jen, a complex surgical challenge required an innovative solution. Having previously undergone a partial stomach removal, she was not suitable for the standard procedure, which typically uses the stomach to reconstruct the oesophagus after cancer surgery.

Instead, a multidisciplinary team of six surgeons from NHG Cancer Institute and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) successfully performed NHG Health’s first minimally invasive robotic-assisted colon interposition procedure, using a segment of the patient’s colon to reconstruct approximately 8cm of the diseased oesophagus.

The procedure involved eight small incisions and robotic-assisted surgery, enabling the team to perform a highly complex operation while supporting a smoother recovery. Just 12 days after surgery, the patient was able to gradually resume eating.

Milestones such as this pave the way for more patients with complex conditions to benefit from advanced, minimally invasive treatment options.

Congratulations to the multidisciplinary team, including Dr Danson Yeo, Dr Wong Kar Yong and Dr Aung Myint Oo, for their collaboration and dedication. Their expertise and commitment to innovation have expanded treatment possibilities for patients with complex cancers, demonstrating the impact of patient-centred care at its best.

We are so proud of our team at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital! 🎉

For 12 years, pre-school teacher Yusmarni lived with chronic shoulder instability — until our orthopaedic surgery team changed that.
