If you struggle to maintain an exercise routine, it may not be because you lack discipline.

It might simply be the wrong time of day.

Emerging research suggests that our internal body clock, known as our circadian rhythm or chronotype can be naturally more alert and physically responsive earlier in the day or function better later in the afternoon or evening.

A recent study found that people who exercised in alignment with their natural rhythm experienced greater improvements in sleep, blood pressure, aerobic fitness, and metabolic health than those who exercised against it.

This challenges the idea that there is one "best" time to exercise.

Instead, the more helpful question may be:

"When does movement feel most sustainable and natural for me?"

Of course, timing is only one piece of the puzzle. Regular movement remains the most important factor.

At New Leaf, we often encourage a shift away from perfection and toward consistency. Health routines are more likely to last when they work with your physiology and lifestyle, rather than against them.

Movement should support your well-being, not become another source of pressure. ✨

Modern medicine has taught us the value of early detection.

We routinely monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and other markers because understanding the body early allows us to intervene earlier and more effectively.

But what about the brain?

Brain health is often discussed only once difficulties become significant, when focus declines, sleep becomes disrupted, stress feels overwhelming, or emotional well-being begins to suffer.

Brain Mapping (qEEG) Assessment reflects a more modern, quantitative and preventative approach to care.

By observing patterns of brain activity, Brain Mapping (qEEG) Assessment can provide insight into how the brain is functioning in areas related to attention, stress regulation, emotional processing, sleep, and cognitive performance.

The goal is not simply diagnosis or labelling.

It is understanding.

This information may help identify patterns that contribute to symptoms, guide more personalised interventions, and support earlier, more targeted care.

At New Leaf, we believe that 21st-century healthcare should move beyond merely reacting to problems. It should include prevention, personalisation, and a deeper understanding of the systems that shape our well-being.

Because your brain deserves the same level of attention as the rest of your health. 🧠

Many people move through life believing their harsh inner voice is simply part of who they are.

But often, that voice was learned.

Psychological and psychoanalytic perspectives suggest that our earliest relationships shape the way we later relate to ourselves. For many, the mother or primary caregiver was the first mirror through which they came to understand safety, comfort, emotional expression, and self-worth.

This does not mean blame.

It means recognising that some of the voices we carry, the inner critic, the perfectionist, the part that fears rejection or never feels “enough", may have roots in earlier experiences.

What is powerful is that these internal patterns are not fixed.

Alongside the critic, we can strengthen what some therapists call the “good inner mother”, the internal voice that is compassionate, protective, emotionally attuned, and supportive.

This voice might ask:

"Are you tired?"
"Do you need rest?"
"What would kindness towards yourself look like today?"

Healing is often not about becoming someone new.

It is about developing a different relationship with yourself.

Counselling can provide a space to understand these inner patterns, explore their origins, and begin to create a more supportive inner dialogue.

Testosterone is often misunderstood.

It is commonly associated with aggression or “male behaviour,” but in reality, it is a hormone that plays a vital role in both men and women.

As a chemical messenger in the body, testosterone influences energy levels, mood, cognitive function, bone health, and reproductive processes. While men typically have higher levels, women also rely on testosterone for functions such as ovarian health, bone strength, and aspects of mental clarity and libido.

What matters most is not how high your levels are, but whether they are balanced.
Both low and excessively high levels can disrupt how you feel, contributing to fatigue, reduced motivation, mood changes, or difficulties with concentration. Hormonal health is part of a larger system, influenced by sleep, stress, nutrition, and overall lifestyle.

Understanding this helps shift the focus from assumptions to awareness.

Because hormones are not about personality, they are about physiology.

If you are noticing changes in your energy, mood, or overall well-being, it may be worth exploring what is happening beneath the surface.

Eating well is not only about being “healthy” on paper. It is about how you feel.

Your energy levels, focus, mood, and ability to stay steady throughout the day are all influenced by what you eat.

The goal is not perfection, but finding what helps your body feel clear, balanced, and supported.

When you begin to pay attention to how different foods affect you, nutrition becomes less about restriction and more about optimisation.

Eating in a way that supports you means choosing foods that help you feel like the best version of yourself, physically and mentally.

If you are unsure where to start or would like a more personalised approach, our nutritionist can help you create a plan tailored to your needs, lifestyle, and goals.

Therapy does not end when the session finishes.

In many ways, the integration that happens afterwards is just as important as the conversation itself.

It is common to leave a session feeling reflective, emotionally open, or even slightly unsettled. This is not a sign that something has gone wrong; it often means something meaningful has been accessed.

Allowing a short pause before returning to your routine can help your nervous system process what has come up. Capturing immediate thoughts or insights can also be valuable, as they tend to be less filtered and more authentic.

Equally important is recognising that there is no “correct” way to feel after therapy. Some sessions feel heavy, others bring clarity or energy. Both are part of the process.
Finally, change rarely happens through large, immediate shifts. It is usually the result of small, consistent adjustments. Choosing one manageable action helps translate insight into practice without creating additional pressure.

Therapy is not only about understanding, but it is also about integration over time.

Many people try to manage worry by pushing it away or distracting themselves from it.

The challenge is that suppression often has the opposite effect. The brain continues to flag concerns as urgent, leading to repeated intrusive thoughts and ongoing mental tension.

The “worry time” technique, commonly used in cognitive behavioural approaches, takes a different direction.

Instead of avoiding worry, it creates a structured space for it.

By setting aside a specific, limited time each day to engage with your worries, you are teaching your brain that concerns will be addressed, just not continuously. When worries arise outside of this window, they are acknowledged and postponed, rather than suppressed.

Over time, this helps reduce the need for constant mental monitoring. The nervous system begins to shift out of a state of ongoing alertness, as it learns that there is a predictable time to process concerns.

This is not about forcing positivity.
It is about creating boundaries around worry.

And for many, that structure creates a noticeable sense of mental relief.

If you find that worry is taking up a significant part of your day, structured techniques like this can be a helpful starting point and something we often explore further in counselling.

Motherhood can bring immense love and meaning, but it can also bring pressure, self-doubt, and emotional exhaustion.

Many mothers quietly carry the expectation to “get it right” all the time. To feel patient, calm, and certain. And when reality feels different, it is often interpreted as not doing enough.

In counselling and therapy, we often explore how these internal pressures develop and how they can be gently challenged. Because feeling overwhelmed does not mean you are failing. It often means you are navigating something deeply important, with care.

Support can make a meaningful difference. Whether it is creating space to reflect, learning how to regulate your nervous system, or simply having a place where you do not have to hold everything alone.

You do not have to navigate this on your own.

If you feel like you would benefit from support, we are here to help.

When we think about mood, we often focus on thoughts, stress, or life circumstances.

But there is another layer that is often overlooked: inflammation. Low-grade, chronic inflammation can quietly influence how you feel on a daily basis.

It does not always present as an illness. Instead, it may show up as:
• Persistent brain fog.
• Ongoing fatigue despite rest.
• Low motivation or reduced mental clarity.

From a physiological perspective, inflammation can affect neurotransmitter production, energy metabolism, and how efficiently the brain communicates. This can impact focus, mood stability, and overall cognitive performance.

This is why mental well-being cannot always be addressed from a psychological angle alone.

Factors such as nutrition, sleep quality, stress levels, and gut health all play a role in regulating inflammation and in turn, how you feel.

Understanding this connection allows for a more targeted and effective approach to care.

Because sometimes, supporting your mood starts with supporting your biology.
If you are experiencing ongoing fatigue, brain fog, or low motivation, it may be worth exploring a more integrative approach.
