This is quite a common question I get in clinic nowadays. Steroid injection may be an option given by the doctor for a quick-fix/ immediate pain relief (with varying results as nothing is guaranteed in the medical realm). Chances of the pain returning will be high if one does not resolve the underlying cause of the pain to begin with. Case scenario: changing the tennis serve technique ➡️ pain ➡️ steroid injection ➡️ no pain ➡️ continue to perform the tennis serve technique that causes pain ➡️ pain return. And usually there is a maximum of 2 steroid injections that will be offered to the same painful joint. It is suggested that one should trial conservative management (medications + physiotherapy + change in lifestyle/ habit/ posture) first before a more invasive treatment like steroid injection, and an operation as a last resort. In every scenario, it is highly recommended to discuss the best option appropriate to you at that stage. Take good care of your body and avoid making a hasty decision.

Christel became a fan of sports massage therapy after benefitting from it. She was experiencing pain in her glutes and numbness in her legs after Muay Thai training. Her orthopaedic doctor told her that she was unable to continue with Muay Thai training based on her MRI results. It was through regular physiotherapy, rehab exercises and sports massage therapy that allowed her to return to Muay Thai training safely within half a year.

Already trained in lymphatic drainage massage for cancer patients 12 years ago, Christel went on to complete her Basic and Advanced Sports Massage Therapy course in 2022. Today, she uses sports massage therapy to help regular gym goers, runners, badminton and tennis players, footballers, deskbound job workers, post operation patients etc to relief them of their discomfort and allowing them to reach their full potential.

“What I learnt from my experience is that it takes a team: the physiotherapist, sports massage therapist, and rehab exercise trainer etc, to help someone in their rehabilitation. And I am proud to be part of the recovery team at Aptive Physiotherapy.” - Christel

Have you ever experienced reduced shoulder movements associated with pain or stiffness, weakness or a feeling like your shoulder is popping out? You may have one or more of the following common shoulder conditions.
-rotator cuff tear
-shoulder impingement
-frozen shoulder
-unstable shoulder
-osteoarthritic shoulder
-labral tear
-bursitis
As the shoulder is a ball and socket joint, it allows movement in many directions. This challenges the stability. Hence, the shoulder stabilisers such as the rotator cuff muscles play a very important role in supporting the joint. We will be sharing ways to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles and tips to prevent shoulder injuries so stay tune!

Stretches generally help to improve your circulation, flexibility and range of motion, lengthen the muscle and relaxes the body.

This post serves to answer a common question from my patients, “What is the difference between Static and Dynamic stretches?”.

Static stretches are holding your body in the same position for a set time to elongate the muscle. Usually held for about 30 seconds to 1 minute for each repetition. Best done after exercising for cool down.

Dynamic stretches are moving the muscle and tissues through a range of motion in the direction of stretch in a controlled manner. Best done before exercising as a warm up for muscles to perform optimally. Tend to be more functional and mimic movement patterns in preparation for the work out.

Hope this helps!

Now that your have done a lumbar MRI and obtained the results. What do you make of it? Chances of the MRI reporting “Normal” is very low for anyone below the age of 20. Take note of the following points before you start being upset, worried or demoralised with your not so perfect Lumbar MRI results.

- lower back is a weight bearing joint
- spine degeneration increases with age and is present even with people not experiencing pain
- there is evidence that lumbar disc herniation gets spontaneous resorption with conservative management (no surgery done)

Regardless, as everyone’s spine and presenting symptoms are different, please consult your own doctor or physiotherapist for your concerns!

Low back pain is a common musculoskeletal condition that has varying degrees of severity. When is it necessary or serious enough to get it investigated?

A scan may be recommended when there are severe or progressive neurological deficits, or when serious underlying conditions are suspected based on history taking and clinical examination.

Examples include trauma such as road traffic accident and fall from height, history of cancer coupled with recent unexplained weight loss, loss of power and/or altered sensation down the legs, bladder or bowel issues, chronic pain of more than 12 weeks.

Do check with your physician or physiotherapist as every low back pain is different and generic exercises learnt from the Internet may do more harm than good!
