Ask Rashmi: Question of the Week

“I want to try couples therapy but my husband doesn’t. How do I convince him?”

Here’s my 1-min Marriage Tip: Stop trying to convince him and do this instead.

The way most people bring up therapy to their partner accidentally makes it worse. I’m breaking down exactly WHY, and giving you the actual words to use to get a very different response.

Save this for when you need it. And send it to a friend who does.

I’m Rashmi Sharma, couples therapist in Singapore working with expat and immigrant couples navigating love, culture, and everything in between. Follow for weekly relationship tools that actually work in real life.

Most couples don't fall apart because they’ve stopped loving each other. 💔

They fall apart because they waited too long to ask for help.

Research shows the average couple waits nearly six years before seeking support — and by then, the distance feels normal, the arguments feel routine, and the connection feels out of reach.

Swipe through to see the 3 real reasons couples delay getting help — and why recognizing them might be the most important thing you do for your relationship today. →

Because the goal isn't to wait until things are bad enough. It's to protect what's still good.

In my practice, I always recommend couples do a marriage check-in at least once a year.

Not because something is broken, but because expat life moves incredibly fast.

You still deeply care about each other. But when you’re constantly managing transitions, your relationship is usually the first thing that gets put on hold. It isn't a lack of love. It’s just a lack of bandwidth.

That’s why I put together the 3-Minute Marriage Check-In.

It’s a gentle, low-pressure way to pause. No exhausting conversations required today. Just 180 seconds to see where you both are, and get a clear idea of how you can better support each other in this current season.

Try taking it together today, during this holiday/long weekend!

One sentence, two completely different meanings. Sound familiar?

She says: “Are we just staying at the condo again?”

What he hears: “You never plan any fun dates.”

What she means: “Let’s go explore a new neighborhood together!”

She says: “I’m exhausted from planning our kid’s party...”

What he hears: “Fix this problem for me right now.”

What she means: “I just need to vent and get a hug. No fixing required.”

She says: “Should we go back home for the holidays?”

What he hears: “I’m getting bored in this city.”

What she means: “I’m feeling a bit homesick today. Let’s look at flights.”

She says: “It’s fine, go grab drinks at Boat Quay.”

What he hears: “I have total permission to go out guilt-free.”

What she means: “I wish you’d stay in, but I don’t want to force you.”

She says: “We never really talk anymore.”

What he hears: “Our marriage is failing and it’s your fault.”

What she means: “I miss you. Let’s put our phones away and connect tonight.”

Living in Singapore as an expat is a wonderful adventure, but it brings its own unique set of pressures.

When we are stressed from navigating a new country and being far from home, our communication is often the first thing to suffer.

It is not about who is “right” or “wrong.” It is about how we deliver our message, and how our partner filters those words through their own exhaustion or insecurities.

If you find yourselves constantly misunderstanding each other, it might be time to pause and adjust how you speak—and listen—to your spouse.

Sometimes, you just need a neutral space to help translate what your partner is truly trying to say.

(Pointers inspired by 🙌)
