Traditional radiotherapy often involves permanent tattoos to help ensure precise alignment during treatment. With advances in radiotherapy technology, Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) is helping to change this, offering a more comfortable, tattoo-free approach.

In celebration of World Radiotherapy Awareness Day, our Radiotherapy team organised an education session for our Medical Oncology nurses at Icon Cancer Centre Mt Alvernia.

The session was a fun and interactive opportunity to learn more about radiotherapy, with quizzes to test their knowledge and a closer look at some of the tools and equipment used to support patients throughout their treatment.

These opportunities for cross-team learning help our care teams better understand each other’s roles and strengthen collaboration across the patient care journey.

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month.

Blood cancers affect many lives, and in Singapore, leukaemia was the 14th most common cancer in 2024.*

Knowing the signs can help us recognise when something may not be right. Symptoms can include persistent fatigue, frequent infections, easy bruising or bleeding, pale skin, or unexplained weight loss.

These symptoms can have many causes, but if they persist or concern you, speak with a doctor.

Last Saturday, Dr Shang Yeap (Medical Oncologist) was invited by Prudential GPS to share his expertise on colorectal cancer with around 50 agents and priority clients in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The session covered key warning signs, including blood in the stool and changes in bowel habits, as well as the importance of maintaining a healthy diet.

Dr Yeap also highlighted the importance of early detection and regular screening, particularly for those aged 50 and above, and shared insights into treatment options including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and genetic testing.

Thank you to KavaLink for the opportunity to raise awareness about colorectal cancer and encourage proactive steps towards better health.

We were pleased to welcome Prof Dr. dr. Soehartati Gondhowiardjo, Dr. Daksa Ganapati and Dr. Prasetya Wibisono to Singapore for ESTRO Meets Asia.

Prof Tati joined a thought-provoking debate on the motion “This House Believes That All Palliative Treatments Will Be Delivered Stereotactically by 2036.”

Her debate championed pragmatism, radiobiology and patient-centred realism over absolutism, highlighting the importance that the future of radiation oncology must be guided not only by what technology can achieve, but by what is right for each patient.

As part of their visit, they visited our Mount Alvernia centre together with dr. Handoko and Laura Young (Radiation Therapist & Clinical Process Manager). Serena Wee (CEO of Icon ASEAN) and Dr Wong Ru Xin (Radiation Oncologist) welcomed the delegation and shared more about our centre and approach to cancer care.

During the visit, our Radiation Therapy team also shared insights into Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) and its application in radiation therapy.

The group then visited the proton therapy facility of our partner, Singapore Institute of Advanced Medicine, gaining insights into the technology and its role in the future of radiotherapy. A special thanks to Dr Shaun Ho and Dr Looi Wen Shen for taking the time to show us around the facility.

These exchanges are an important part of strengthening regional healthcare collaboration, bringing together diverse expertise and perspectives to collectively shape the future of cancer care in ASEAN.

Over the weekend, Olivia and Wenya proudly walked the runway at Fashion For Cancer 2026 as Model Ambassadors. They took to the runway not just to showcase fashion, but to celebrate their journeys as breast cancer survivors.

Dr Karmen Wong and our team were there to cheer them on and show our support. We are proud to see Olivia & Wenya celebrate how far they have come, and inspire others who may still be navigating their own cancer journey.

Fashion For Cancer celebrates the strength, resilience and courage of those battling cancer, while recognising that the journey continues beyond treatment.

At Icon, we believe survivorship is an important part of cancer care, supporting patients to regain confidence, embrace life and look towards the future. We are proud to stand behind a cause that shares this belief.
