What is REM? Sleep Explained Simply

REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement sleep.
It's the stage of sleep most closely associated with vivid dreaming.
During REM sleep, your brain becomes highly active, while most of your muscles are temporarily switched off — probably to stop you acting out your dreams.
REM also appears to play an important role in memory, learning and processing emotions.
That's how I would bend it today.
REM isn't the only important stage of sleep, but it's certainly one of the most fascinating.

What Actually Happens During Sleep

“Sleep isn’t your body switching off. It’s when some of its most important work begins.
Sleep is not simply the absence of being awake.
Your brain remains remarkably active.
Different stages of sleep help support memory, learning, emotional processing and physical recovery.
Far from shutting down, the brain is carrying out important maintenance work throughout the night.
That's how I would bend it today.
Sleep is an active biological process, not simply a period of rest.

Do More Meals a day Increase Your Metabolism?

“Dr Ben, I’ve heard that eating more meals throughout the day increases your metabolism. Is that true?”
Thank you for sharing this. It’s a very common belief.
Your body does burn some energy whenever it digests food.
But if the total amount and type of food are the same, eating six smaller meals instead of three larger meals does not meaningfully increase the total number of calories you burn.
Eating more frequently may help some people control their hunger.
But for others, it simply creates more opportunities to snack and overeat.
So you don’t need to eat every two or three hours to keep your metabolism active.
That’s how I would bend it today.
The best meal pattern is the one that helps you manage your appetite, eat well and remain consistent.

Why Does Cholesterol Rise With Age?

“Dr Ben, does cholesterol naturally increase as we get older?”
Excellent question.
For many people, cholesterol levels do tend to rise as they get older, particularly during middle age.
There are several reasons when this can happen.
One of the reasons is because cholesterol is used to make hormones and our hormone levels naturally fall as we age. And that leaves more cholesterol unused.
As we age, the liver may become less effective at clearing LDL, or bad cholesterol, from the bloodstream.
Changes in weight, activity levels, diet and insulin resistance can also contribute.
For women, cholesterol can rise more noticeably after menopause because of the fall in oestrogen.
So although increasing cholesterol is more common as we get older, we shouldn’t automatically dismiss it as a normal part of ageing.
That’s how I would bend it today.
Cholesterol levels do rise as we age
What matters is your cholesterol level together with your overall risk of heart disease and stroke.
