Highlight of the week‼️
Jus se mek yu no‼️

Asking questions before dispensing medication is always important, as it helps you to make the right decisions. This might be a little bit long but is worth reading.

Last week a woman came to our pharmacy asking for blood pressure medication, assuming she wasas hypertensive, so I asked, "What blood pressure medication do you want?" She stated, describing it by color, and I figured out she meant Amlodipine.

Then I asked when you last checked your blood pressure and how long you have been on this medication and when you last took it. She said it's been long; I checked it, and I can’t remember when last I took the medication, maybe last December. But she wants the medication because she is having a headache. So I called her into my office to check her blood pressure, and it read 107/80.
I said your blood pressure is ok, just a bit low; you don’t need an antihypertensive medication, and she should be checking her BP always, preferably weekly.

Now this is the most interesting part: if I had given her the medication when her BP was low, it should have led to serious complications like shock, rapid heart beat(tachycardia) fainting (syncope) or even coma and other complications.

Juste: Just because a medicine is popular and they are using it mostly in the treatment oa certaintain condition does not make it the only medicine for that condition. Medicine is not one size fits all; what works for you might not work for the other. Whenever you get sick, get a proper diagnosis before taking medicine.
So talk to your healthcare professional about your condition before requesting medication.

After a long discussion I advised her to go to the hospital for a checkup and bring me her prescription.

Highlight if the week ‼️

Last week a woman walked into our pharmacy asking for nitrazepam, a benzodiazepine medication used for sleep aid, anxiety, and muscle relaxation.

I asked her, "Why do you need medication?"
Do you have a prescription?"
She said no, but that it's what her husband has been taking for years now, and without that he can’t get sleep, and even when he takes the medication, he hardly sleeps also unless he has to increase the dose to 20 mg (that is, taking 4 tablets).

I asked when her husband last saw a doctor; he said sometime last year when he was sick and they prescribed some medication for him, so whenever he started having the symptoms, he goes to the pharmacy and refilled the prescription, and now she is familiar with the medication.

I told her to let her husband see the doctor instead of him increasing the doses of his medication without talking to his doctor, as that can cause serious side effects from the medication and lead to severe health complications.

She said honestly, "We don’t have time for that. Let me just get the medicine first, and I will know what to do later." As for the past days, she has not been able to get enough sleep due to her husband's sleeplessness.
I told her,
"I understand, Madam, but before refilling a prescription you should talk to your doctor and give him feedback on whether you feel better or worse or what new symptoms you are feeling."

So please talk to your husband and let you guys see a doctor for more checkups. After a long discussion with her she finally agreed for them to see a Doctor.

She promised to give me feedback and I am patiently waiting for them.
