๐ŸŒ World Field Epidemiology Day | 7 September 2026

Since 2021, the Somali FETP has played a vital role in strengthening public health in Somalia. With more than 171 trained front-line field epidemiologists, the program continues to support emergency response, outbreak investigations, disease surveillance, immunization, research, and other critical public health activities across the country.

Today, we celebrate the dedication, resilience, and impact of the Somali FETP family. Thank you for your commitment to protecting communities and strengthening the health system in Somalia!

The Final Workshop and Graduation Ceremony of Frontline SOM-FETP Cohort 7 is underway, under the leadership of the Ministry of Health- Somalia and Somalia National Institute of Health

A total of 25 participants from the Federal and State Ministries of Health are presenting final field activities, including surveillance assessments, outbreak investigations, data quality audits, EPI triangulation and community-based surveillance activities. Their work is being evaluated by experts from African Field Epidemiology Network CDC

The program concludes on 10 June 2026, marking the successful graduation of a new cohort of field epidemiologists equipped to strengthen disease surveillance, outbreak response, and public health emergency preparedness across Somalia.

The Frontline FETP is a 3-month, competency-based program that equips health workers with practical skills in surveillance, outbreak investigation, data analysis, and communication. Through โ€œlearning by doing,โ€ it strengthens our ability to detect, respond to, and contain public health emergencies before they spread .

As part of the commemoration of World Immunization Week 2026. The SOM-FETP Alumni Network joined hands with the State Ministry of Health and World Vision International to reach communities and students with important immunization messages.

๐Ÿ“ Baidoa, South West State: The team visited Elbet-One IDP settlement, part of Baidoa Catchment Two (CA02), which hosts over 56,000 residents across 67 IDP settlements. An EPI awareness session was also conducted at the University of Southern Somalia to enhance understanding of the benefits of vaccination.

๐Ÿ“ Beledweyne, Hirshabelle State: In collaboration with the Central University for Science and Technology, the team commemorated World Immunization Week through an engaging awareness event, bringing students together to learn about the vital role of vaccines in protecting communities.

Together, we continue to promote healthier communities through immunization.

As part of World Immunization week at the end of April 2026. Somali Field Epidemiology Network team visited Daynile, Garasbaley, and Kahda of Banadir region which hosts large numbers of internally displaced persons (DPs) communities who are living due to the drought, climate shock and rapid urbanization, The team reached communities through EPI awareness meetings, engaged community members, and provided health workers with EPI and IEC materials. The SOM-FETP team had also provided EPI session to Banadir University and Hayat University in Mogadishu contributing to stronger vaccine confidence, public awareness, and community engagement, engagement with religious-leaders and influencers and Female Health Workers in Health facility committees

Today, our Somali Field Epidemiology Network team members in Hirshabelle state & local health workers travelled across 95 KM northwest of Beledweyne town after emergency suspected Measles outbreak reported in Baadikeen Village. The team had organized a micro-campaign measles vaccination campaign by targeting 230 children under five years of age vaccinated against measles with the support of community volunteers to respond rapidly to the suspected outbreak vaccination campaign and help ensure safe, high-quality vaccination services for every child.

Ministry of Health, Hirshabelle and partners are responding to the outbreak with rapid response teams including SOM-FETP teams helping with case detection, community engagement and a vaccination campaign

Earlier yesterday, a five days, second-round Diphtheria Outbreak Response Campaign officially commenced in South West State priority districts across Bay region, (Baidoa, Burhakaba, Berdale, Dinsor and Qasaxdhere district targeting children who missed routine immunization services.

A total of 372,038 children are being targeted across 5 districts, with the goal of protecting communities through timely vaccination and increased public awareness.

Following the diphtheria outbreak reported across the country, the Somali Field Epidemiology Network (SOM-FETP Alumni Network) calls upon its members at both national and state levels to intensify community sensitization, support vaccination campaigns, and strengthen surveillance, outbreak prevention efforts to curb the spread of the disease.

Special appreciation to Wasaaradda Caafimaadka, Koonfurgalbeed for its leadership, coordination, and commitment to protecting vulnerable communities.
