๐ In this study, we examined regional inequalities in malaria incidence and mortality among under-five children across Somaliaโs 18 regions using subnational data from 2010โ2019.
๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐:
๐ฆ Plasmodium falciparum incidence increased sharply between 2010 and 2015, with persistent high burden in central and southern Somalia.
๐ In 2019, Bay and Juba Dhexe recorded some of the highest P. falciparum incidence among children aged 0โ4 years.
โ ๏ธ For malaria mortality, the most severe and fluctuating burden was concentrated in Juba Hoose, Juba Dhexe, and Bay.
๐ Plasmodium vivax incidence remained low and relatively stable across regions.
Despite narrowing incidence gaps, malaria mortality inequalities remained severe. By 2019, children in the most affected regions were still more than four times more likely to die from malaria than those in the least affected regions.
These findings highlight an important reality: malaria control must go beyond national averages. Somalia needs targeted, subnational, equity-focused interventions that strengthen healthcare access, improve clinical management, and prioritize high-mortality regions.
