As Eswatini continues to advance its digital health agenda, partnerships that promote knowledge sharing and innovation remain critical to strengthening health information systems.

The HMIS team recently joined colleagues from Data.FI Eswatini for an engaging learning session on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and predictive modelling, facilitated by a Data Science Specialist from the Data.FI agile team during her visit to the country.

The session provided practical insights into how machine learning models are developed, trained, and applied to address complex public health challenges. Discussions also explored the potential application of these technologies within health information systems, including opportunities to enhance data use, forecasting, and evidence-based decision-making.
This engagement provided valuable technical expertise to the HMIS team, equipping the team with knowledge that can support future innovations in health information management and data-driven decision-making.

🌍 Showcasing Eswatini's Digital Health Innovations at ECSA-HC 2026

Last week, health leaders, policymakers, researchers, and partners from across the region gathered at the 16th ECSA-HC Best Practices Forum to share innovations and advance resilient, secure, and sustainable health systems.

We are proud that the HMIS Unit, along with colleagues from the Data.FI Project and ENAP, presented four abstracts showcasing how data and digital health solutions are strengthening healthcare delivery in Eswatini and contributing to global health priorities.

1. Predicting ART Treatment Interruption Using Machine Learning
2. Leveraging CMIS Enhancements to Accelerate Lenacapavir PrEP Delivery
3. Strengthening CMIS-LIS Interoperability to Reduce Laboratory Turnaround Time

HMIS OFFICIALLY BIDS FAREWELL TO THANDI ZWANE 🎉🌸

The Health Management Information System officially bid farewell to Health Information Officer, Ms. Thandi Zwane, who was celebrated by colleagues on Friday following her retirement.

Ms. Zwane retires after many years of dedicated and valuable service to the Ministry of Health, contributing significantly to the health information sector and supporting the work of HMIS throughout her career.

Her farewell celebration brought together colleagues from HMIS and Data.Fi Eswatini, who gathered to honour her remarkable service, dedication, and contribution to the health sector.

We wish her a happy, fulfilling, and well-deserved retirement. Her contribution will always be remembered and appreciated.

Exciting progress in strengthening Eswatini's digital health ecosystem!

The Ministry of Health's Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) team, with support from Data.FI, has been conducting facility readiness assessments over the past several months to support the expansion of the Client Management Information System (CMIS) into Inpatient and Maternity care services.

This expansion marks a significant milestone in the scale-up of the country's centralized electronic medical record system. By extending CMIS beyond outpatient services, the initiative will help accelerate the digitization of healthcare delivery, replacing paper-based processes and reducing fragmentation across health facilities. Ultimately, this will improve access to quality patient information and support better continuity of care.

Recently, stakeholders came together to review findings from assessments conducted across 13 health facilities nationwide. While the long-term vision is to roll out the Inpatient and Maternity Modules across all government inpatient facilities, four facilities were selected for the first phase of the CMIS Inpatient & maternity module rollout.

The next phase will focus on completing the necessary internal processes and detailed planning for the rollout at the selected sites, bringing Eswatini one step closer to a fully integrated digital health system.

The Development and Database Team Capacity Building Workshop officially commenced today, bringing together the Ministry of Health's HMIS team and the Data.FI team to strengthen Eswatini’s digital health ecosystem.

The week-long workshop focuses on key national platforms, including CMIS, eLMIS, LIS, CBHIS, and the Health Information Exchange (HIE), with participants reviewing progress, addressing implementation bottlenecks, aligning priorities, and strengthening capabilities in areas such as IIT monitoring, analytics, interoperability, and AI-driven insights.

A key objective is to build sustainable in-country technical capacity, ensuring the Ministry of Health is well-positioned to manage, maintain, and continuously improve these critical systems for the long term. Ultimately, the workshop reinforces a shared commitment to high-quality data, real-time access to information, and stronger digital health systems that support timely decision-making and better patient care across Eswatini.

Key stakeholders are convening this week at Sibane Sami Hotel for a workshop focused on developing Eswatini's Digital Health Strategy roadmap. The week-long engagement aims to establish a clear direction for digital health over the coming years, while defining the governance, standards, and frameworks that will guide and lend credibility to the country's digital health ecosystem.

Acting Chief Strategic Information Officer , Zanele Simelane, shared key milestones in our journey towards a fully integrated health system.

"We are working to ensure all our data is coordinated in one room for real-time sharing and continuum of care."

Eswatini has reached level 3 in the global Digital Health Maturity Model, putting the country in the Top 4 in Africa!

With more than 4,200 health workers trained in the use of digital health systems, the vision is to push for sustainable digital health solutions.

Taking a brief pause from building and managing systems, optimizing user experiences, monitoring performance, and advancing research to strengthen Eswatini's digital health ecosystem, HMIS recently had the opportunity to connect with key stakeholders.

Last week, Palladium, a key partner in Eswatini's digital health landscape, invited the Ministry of Health's Strategic Information Department (SID) to celebrate 61 years of service. The day featured team-building activities, meaningful engagement, and a chance to reconnect with nature through a group walk and wildlife viewing at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary.

Stakeholder engagement moments like these are invaluable. They provide an opportunity to pause, recharge, and strengthen relationships with partners who share a common vision of a more connected, innovative, and resilient digital health ecosystem in Eswatini.

Together, these partnerships continue to drive collaboration, learning, and lasting impact across the health sector. 🤝🌿

The stakeholder review process for the updated Master Facility List (MFL) has made significant progress, marking another important step toward a more integrated and data-driven health information ecosystem in Eswatini.

At this stage, focus shifts to final implementation activities, including systems integration, geo-referencing, and strengthening user capacity to ensure sustainable use of these digital health investments.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all government stakeholders, development partners, and implementing agencies whose collaboration continues to drive this initiative forward. We look forward to its successful completion and the lasting impact it will have on strengthening health systems across Eswatini.
