Protecting future generations: Thailand’s to***co control efforts recognized on ***coDay 2026 🚭

Congratulations to Acting Sub-Lieutenant Trakul Thotham, Inspector-General of the Ministry of Interior, and the To***co Control Research and Knowledge Management Center (TRC) on receiving the World No To***co Day Award 2026 for their outstanding contributions to advancing to***co control in Thailand. Their work includes strengthening to***co control measures and mobilizing community action in Southern Thailand, and advancing evidence generation, policy development and public awareness nationwide.

On 31 May 2026, Thailand marked this year’s ***coDay under the theme “Unmasking the Appeal: Countering To***co and Ni****ne Addiction” through a national event. The event was led by General Siva Paramathat, representing Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, H.E. Mr Pattana Promphat, Minister of Public Health, Dr Montien Kanasawat, Director-General of the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, and Dr Ailan Li, WHO Representative to Thailand.

According to Thailand’s 7th National Health Examination Survey (2025), smoking among people aged 15 years and above has continued to decline over the past two decades. However, new challenges are emerging among younger age groups. Among every 100 children aged 10–14 years, around 9 have ever smoked (8.5%), 7 have tried e-cigarettes (7.1%), and nearly 2 are current e-cigarette users (1.6%). These trends highlight the need for continued action to protect children and young people from to***co and ni****ne addiction.

“WHO calls for strong, evidence-based measures to prevent uptake by banning or tightly regulating these products. Thailand can lead this effort to protect young generations,” said Dr Ailan Li, WHO Representative to Thailand.

WHO commends Thailand’s continued leadership and commitment to advancing to***co control and protecting future generations from to***co and ni****ne addiction.

Dr Catharina Boehme, Officer-in-Charge, WHO South-East Asia, highlights why strong regulation is one of the most powerful tools to protect people from ni****ne and to***co addiction.

In her latest article, “Countering Ni****ne and To***co Addiction through Regulation: the South-East Asia Experience,” she explains how attractive flavours, targeted marketing, influencer promotions, and emerging ni****ne products are designed to appeal to young people and why stronger regulatory action is essential to safeguard public health.

The WHO South-East Asia Region is home to around 322 million adult to***co users and over 288 million smokeless to***co users—around 80% of the global burden of smokeless to***co use, underscoring the urgency of sustained to***co control efforts.

This year, ***coDay 🚭 is being marked under the theme “Unmasking the appeal — countering ni****ne and to***co addiction,” exposing how the to***co and ni****ne industry continues to target and trap young people in addiction.

Once the world’s 🌏 highest-burden region for to***co use, South-East Asia has achieved the steepest decline in to***co prevalence globally and is on track to surpass the global target for reducing adult to***co use.

But the fight is not over. WHO calls on countries and communities to sustain and deepen the commitments that have made the region a global leader in to***co control.

From disease outbreaks and environmental risks to health promotion and disease prevention, countries increasingly rely on a strong, skilled and adequately supported public health workforce to protect population health, starting at the community level.

On 28 May 2026, Dr Ailan Li, WHO Representative to Thailand, together with Dr Watcharanan Tinnaitorn, Deputy Director of the Division of Public Health Emergency Management, Ministry of Public Health, met with Counsellor Zhang Xiaoxiao from the Economic & Commercial Counsellor's Office, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Kingdom of Thailand. The meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment under the Essential Public Health Functions (EPHF) Roadmap, which aims to strengthen Thailand’s public health workforce, enhance emergency preparedness, and advance community-based health promotion and disease prevention efforts.

WHO commends Thailand’s continued leadership in building resilient, cross-sectoral health systems and appreciates the Government of the Republic of China’s support through partnership and multilateral cooperation. WHO remains committed to supporting a public health workforce that not only responds to emergencies, but also contributes to health promotion, community engagement, and health literacy, helping to advance a safer, healthier, and more people-centred future for all.

In many countries, 13-15 year olds are overtaking adults in v**e use. This is a trap.
To***co companies are targeting young people whose brains are vulnerable to ni****ne addiction.
And va**ng can harm more than you think:
🧠 Ni****ne is highly addictive and impairs brain development in under-25s
☠️ V**e aerosols contains toxic substances
🫁 Va**ng increases risk of lung disorders
❤️ Va**ng increases risk of cardiovascular disease
Here’s what governments must do to protect youth: Ban flavours, marketing and designs that increase youth appeal.
