Cannabis use disorder is real. So are the risks.

But turning a complex study into a simple “cannabis is addictive” headline doesn’t help us understand why problematic use is increasing.

The conversation needs more nuance: potency, dose, frequency, product type, patterns of use, and the people most at risk.

We don’t need to defend cannabis from uncomfortable data.

We need to understand it.

Cannabis isn’t medicine.

At least, not in the way the industry keeps trying to make it.

Yes, cannabis can have medical applications. And yes, regulation matters. But somewhere along the way, we’ve started confusing pharmaceutical standards with quality.

Cannabis is still an agricultural product. Its genetics, cultivation, environment, harvest, curing and storage all influence what ends up in the final flower.

Putting it in pharmaceutical-style packaging doesn’t change that.

The industry doesn’t need to become pharma to be taken seriously.

Maybe we should start taking agriculture seriously instead.

Do we have an identity problem in cannabis?
