Asst.Prof.Nutchar Wiwatkunupakarn, M.D. and the research team of the research project "Development of a Health Data Learning System Approach for the Care of Hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes, and Chronic Kidney Disease Patients at the Primary Care Level in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand" were invited as speakers at the workshop on curriculum development and capacity building for family medicine physicians and multidisciplinary teams working in primary care units and primary care unit networks, under the Project for Developing a Family Medicine Learning Center and Primary Care System Development, Health Region 1. The lecture topic was "Linking Health Services (LHS) for Diabetes and Hypertension Patients to Prevent Chronic Kidney Disease," held during 24–25 August 2026 at the Ruen Khum Room, Khum Phu Kham Hotel, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province.

ผู้ช่วยคณบดีด้านวิจัย คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ และคณะวิจัย ได้จัดการประชุมเปิดโครงการพัฒนาระบบสุขภาพเพื่อความยั่งยืนสำหรับเด็กและสตรีมีครรภ์ที่ได้รับผลกระทบจากมลพิษทางอากาศและสภาพอากาศร้อน (Climate-Adaptive Paediatric Health Systems) ในวันศุกร์ที่ 21 สิงหาคม 2569 ณ โรงแรมแคนทารี ฮิลส์ เชียงใหม่ โดยมีพื้นที่ชุมชน โรงเรียน และ หน่วยบริการสุขภาพปฐมภูมิ เข้าร่วมการประชุมเปิดโครงการและนำเสนอสถานการณ์และประสบการณ์จากพื้นที่นำร่อง ในครั้งนี้ด้วย
โครงการวิจัยดังกล่าว โดยความร่วมมือกับ Climate Change Data Center รวมทั้ง กระทรวงสาธารณสุข และ Nanyang Technological University (NTU) ประเทศสิงคโปร์ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อพัฒนา Platform นวัตกรรมที่ผสมผสานข้อมูลสุขภาพและปัจจัยเสี่ยงจากสภาพแวดล้อม pm2.5 และ อุณหภูมิ ที่มีผลต่อสุขภาพ โรคทางเดินหายใจ ทั้งนี้ชุมชน โรงเรียน และ หน่วยบริการสุขภาพปฐมภูมิ (primary care) เช่น โรงพยาบาลส่งเสริมสุขภาพตำบล (รพ.สต.) และ โรงพยาบาลประจำอำเภอ สามารถออกแบบมาตราการป้องกันและดูแลสุขภาพเด็กและเยาวชนที่มีความเสี่ยงสูงในพื้นที่ได้อย่างเหมาะสม โดยได้รับการสนับสนุนทุนจาก Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) under the ASEAN-UK Health Security Partnership Programme

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chaisiri Angkurawaranon, Head of the Global Health Research Center and Assistant Dean for Research, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, together with the research team, held the launch meeting for the project "Development of Sustainable Health Systems for Children and Pregnant Women Affected by Air Pollution and Heat" (Climate-Adaptive Paediatric Health Systems) on Friday, 21 August 2026, at Kantary Hills Hotel, Chiang Mai. Representatives from local communities, schools, and primary healthcare units also joined the launch and presented updates and experiences from the pilot areas.

The project, conducted in collaboration with the Climate Change Data Center, the Ministry of Public Health, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, aims to develop an innovative platform that integrates health data with environmental risk factors — including PM2.5 and temperature — linked to respiratory illness. This will enable communities, schools, and primary care units, such as Sub-district Health Promoting Hospitals (รพ.สต.) and district hospitals, to design appropriate preventive and healthcare measures for high-risk children and youth in their areas.

The project is supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), under the ASEAN-UK Health Security Partnership Programme.

CCC Fogarty Summer Workshop 2026

The Global Health Research Center, Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, hosted the CCC Fogarty Summer Workshop 2026 on 10 and 11 August at the Eastin Tan Hotel, Chiang Mai. The two-day meeting brought together researchers and trainees from CMU, the Center for HIV Identification, Prevention and Treatment Services (CHIPTS) at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Hanoi Medical University.

The workshop forms part of the CCC HIV Capacity Building Program, funded by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health under grant D43TW012489. The programme is led by Prof. Sung-Jae Lee of UCLA, together with Assoc. Prof. Chunqing Lin, Assoc. Prof. Chaisiri Angkurawaranon and Prof. Le Minh Giang.

Assoc. Prof. Chaisiri Angkurawaranon opened the meeting and moderated the first session, which was followed by a programme update from Assoc. Prof. Chunqing Lin covering accomplishments to date, training milestones and priorities for the period ahead.

The first day was given over to trainee presentations from all three cohorts across Thailand and Vietnam, covering training progress, in-country projects, publications, funding applications and the obstacles encountered along the way. GloCal fellows also presented their work, and the day closed with cohort three discussing mentorship arrangements, training needs and forthcoming visits to UCLA.

The second day ran as two concurrent tracks. Prof. Alison Hamilton of UCLA led sessions on implementation science, revisiting rapid qualitative analysis before an interactive workshop on quality improvement strategies, from identifying quality gaps to selecting and applying appropriate approaches. In the parallel track, Ms. Uyen Kao led sessions on the application and management of centre grants, drawing on the administrative structure of CHIPTS to work through grant development, financial coordination, reporting, subawards and cross-institutional communication.

The afternoon brought both tracks back together for reporting, followed by a session on career development and independent research planning led by Assoc. Prof. Chunqing Lin, Assoc. Prof. Chaisiri Angkurawaranon, and Prof. Le Minh Giang, covering publication planning, mentorship, pilot funding, career development awards and cross-country collaboration.

The workshop closed with evaluation and action planning. The meeting concluded with agreed next steps for the programme's next phase, including renewal planning, leadership structure, cohort three recruitment, and continued research collaboration between the three partner institutions.

The objectives of this activity are to prepare pilot areas for the diabetes phase and scale up the project for hypertension to other areas in Chiang Mai Province. The event featured activities introducing the use of the APL tool, planning the PDSA workshop program for the DM phase, and demonstrating the use of the APL tool according to actionable indicators by model areas.
There was also a panel discussion sharing experiences and obstacles in patient care, the role of the APL tool in solving problems, the teamwork of multidisciplinary teams, and the role of facilitators in driving change, among other topics. Researchers and family medicine physicians closely provided guidance and facilitated access to learning health system development activities.

On August 11, 2026, Mr. Pichai Lertpongadisorn, President of the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO), assigned Dr. Termchai Temyingyong, Vice President of the Chiang Mai PAO, to participate in the panel discussion on "Precision Public Health for Cross-Sector Collaboration" under the Learning Health System project at Convention Room, Alpine Golf Resort Chiang Mai, Ban Thi District, Lamphun Province.

This panel discussion was organized by the Global Health Research Center, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, to exchange approaches on utilizing health data to develop service systems and citizen care in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Interior, and Chiang Mai University, focusing on the primary care level management of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.

Regarding past implementation, the Learning Health System project initially launched in 6 pilot areas—Mae Wang Hospital, San Pa Tong Hospital, Hot Hospital, Hang D**g Hospital, Chai Prakan Hospital, and Chiang Dao Hospital—to develop and test approaches for utilizing health data in local patient care before exchanging insights and preparing actionable indicators for scaling up to other areas in Chiang Mai Province.
The Chiang Mai PAO moves forward with supporting health collaboration, connecting data, knowledge, and multi-sectoral operations to develop health service systems that address local needs and efficiently care for the public.

Faculty of Medicine, CMU, Receives HRH The Princess Royal as Researchers are Awarded the ASEAN-UK Health Security Partnership Grant

Assoc. Prof. Chaisiri Angkurawaranon, M.D., Head of Global Heath Research Center Medcmu and Assistant Dean for Research, Innovation, and International Relations, the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, along with his research team, has received funding under the ASEAN-UK Health Security Partnership (HSP) Programme Round 1 to conduct a research project titled "Climate Adaptive Pediatric Health System." The team was also selected to present their work during the visit of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) of the United Kingdom to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, where she presided over the launch of the ASEAN-UK Health Security Partnership (HSP) Programme.

The "Climate Adaptive Pediatric Health System" project is a collaboration among the Global Health Research Center (GHRC) at the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University; the Climate Change Data Center; the Ministry of Public Health; and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The project aims to develop an innovative platform that integrates pediatric health data with environmental data—specifically PM2.5 fine particulate matter and temperature—which are critical factors affecting respiratory diseases in children and youth. This initiative is designed to support communities, schools, and primary healthcare units, such as sub-district health promoting hospitals and community hospitals, in effectively designing preventive measures, surveillance, and care for vulnerable groups, tailored to the specific context of each area.

Being selected to present this work before Her Royal Highness is a great source of pride for the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University. It demonstrates the Faculty's research capability in developing knowledge and innovations to address regional and global health challenges, particularly in mitigating the impacts of climate change on pediatric health through integrated collaboration with both domestic and international partner networks.

CMU Welcomes Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal of the United Kingdom and Congratulates Faculty Members Awarded ASEAN–UK HSP (Round 1) Grants.

Associate Professor Dr. Winita Punyodom, Vice President of Chiang Mai University, joined in welcoming Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal of the United Kingdom on her visit to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University. Her Royal Highness presided over the launch of the ASEAN–UK Health Security Partnership (HSP) Programme, a collaborative initiative focused on strengthening health security, developing equitable health systems, enhancing disease surveillance, and promoting the "One Health" approach to address health risks arising from climate change.

On this occasion, the Vice President extended her congratulations to Associate Professor Chaisiri Angkurawaranon, M.D., Ph.D., Head of Global Heath Research Center Medcmu and Assistant Dean for Research, Innovation, and International Relations, the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, and his research team, who were awarded a grant to implement the project titled "Climate Adaptive Pediatric Health System."
