How deep can the human mind truly go?
In Buddhism, there is a state that is almost impossible for the average person to imagine.

It is called the Nine Successive Attainments (Anupubbavihara-samapatti), or the nine stages of the mind’s journey from distraction to a tranquility that transcends words.

• The First Stage (First Jhana): The mind begins to sever ties with external chaos. Thoughts still exist, but they start to settle, replaced by an inner sense of happiness.

• The Second Stage (Second Jhana): The internal monologue begins to fall silent, leaving only stillness and a radiant clarity of mind.

• The Third Stage: Even that initial rapture begins to fade, leaving only profound peace and complete equanimity.

• The Fourth Stage (Fourth Jhana): The mind becomes so refined and still that even the breath grows faint, nearly vanishing.
But the truly awe-inspiring part begins after that, as the mind enters the Formless Realms. It starts with the perception of Infinite Space, followed by Infinite Consciousness, and then a state where it seems as though Nothingness remains—no self, no thought, and no personal boundaries.

At the deepest level, you reach a state beyond explanation. In the final stage, perception and feeling temporarily cease. It is not death, but a peace that exists beyond the reach of language.

Buddhism does not view this as supernatural; rather, it sees this as the ultimate potential of the human mind. The question is: in our world today, have we ever stopped to listen to our own minds long enough?
