During the rainy season with its flooded and muddy conditions, the Department of Disease Control warns of a zoonotic disease, "Leptospirosis," which is transmitted through contaminated water. This disease is often contaminated from the urine of animals (especially rats, cattle, buffaloes, pigs, and dogs) and can enter the body through wounds, scratches, or skin that is softened from prolonged immersion in water, as well as through the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth.
🚨 High-risk groups to watch out for: Farmers, livestock farmers, fishermen, those who have to work in flooded areas, and tourists in natural water sources.
🤒 Symptoms to watch for (1-2 weeks after infection):
Initial symptoms: Sudden high fever, severe headache, chills.
Prominent symptoms: Severe muscle pain (especially in the calves and thighs). Red eyes may also occur.
Severe symptoms: If left untreated, it can lead to liver/kidney failure, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abnormal bleeding, and death!
