Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed on the nasal cartilage and bone to achieve an aesthetically harmonious nasal appearance and to correct breathing problems (e.g., septum deviation). It is performed under general anesthesia, lasts approximately 3 hours, and can be done using open or closed techniques.
Process & Recovery Timeline
Immediately After Surgery:
Silicone splints are placed inside the nose and a thermal/cast splint is placed on the outside. Cold application during the first 48–72 hours is important to reduce swelling and bruising.
Splint Removal:
Silicone splints inside the nose are typically removed within 2–3 days, and the external nasal splint is removed on the 7th day.
Return to Social Life:
Most of the swelling subsides within 1–2 weeks, allowing patients to return to desk work and daily routines.
Full Recovery:
It takes 6–12 months for the nose to take its final shape and for all edema to fully resolve (sometimes 1–2 years in patients with thick skin).
Postoperative Care Instructions
During the first few days, rest with the head elevated.
Avoid contact sports or any activity that may risk nasal trauma for at least 4–6 weeks.
Refrain from excessive facial expressions for one week and be cautious when chewing hard foods.
Direct sun exposure and intense physical exercise should also be avoided, as they may negatively affect the healing process.
