Hyperpigmentation. Increasing cellular turnover with Retinoids

Next to AHA, retinoids are the best ingredient for increasing cellular turnover….

Retinoids affect both the epidermis and dermis.

In the epidermis - central to hyperpigmentation and visible skin aging - retinoids increase epidermal cell turnover by changing gene expression in skin cells, especially in keratinocytes. They don’t simply “speed up peeling”—they regulate how skin cells grow, mature, and are shed.

When retinoic acid receptors are activated, a more organized and efficient renewal of the epidermis takes place.

Normally, a keratinocyte forms in the basal layer of the epidermis, migrates upward through the epidermis, becomes a flattened corneocyte and is shed from the skin surface.

Retinoids accelerate this process by increasing the production of new keratinocytes in the basal layer, promoting their orderly differentiation and enhancing the shedding of surface corneocytes.

This shortens the time it takes for a skin cell to travel from the basal layer to the surface and leads to
* the fading of hyperpigmentation
* smoother skin
* fewer fine line, and
* cleaner pores

🌱Natural retinoids at abtira can be found in

- RETINALG (micro algae derived retinol analogue)
- CORAL SEA (sea fennel derived botanical retinoid)

They offer all befits of retinol without irritation!

Hyperpigmentation. Increasing cellular turnover with AHA.

We continue our exploration of the skin in menopause. We are still at the epidermis level.

Two best ways to tackle hyperpigmentation is by targeting melanogenesis directly (e.g. with plankton extracts) or increasing the cellular turnover.

One way to remove the unwanted pigment from the epidermis is by increasing cellular turnover with alpha hydroxy acids.

AHAs essentially dissolves the lipids (the cement) between the skin cells. This way the adhesion between dead skin cells decreases , leading to:

* Faster shedding of pigmented keratinocytes
* More rapid replacement with newly formed cells
* Gradual fading of hyperpigmentation

At abtira we have a host of products containing AHA. Our signature Blush collection, Fruit Night cream and Green Mandarin mask are all rich in AHA.

Blush tonic - 5% AHA
Blush elixir - 5% AHA + 5% BHA
Fruit Night cream - 5% AHA
Green Mandarin mask - 20% AHA + 5% BHA

Acids are best used at night, and followed by sun screen during the day.

Hyperpigmentation. HERBAL ELIXIR. Targeting dark spots with plankton.

In menopause, there is on one hand less of the melanogeneis - that is why the skin becomes paler. But on the other hand - melanogenesis becomes irregular leading to hyperpigmentation and spotting.

There are many well known skin brightening ingredients that help control tyrosinase activity - for example arbutin or kojic acid. But they affect melanogenesis uniformly - making the skin paler overall. This is something we do not necessarily want in menopause.

Ideally we want skincare to target the dark spots specifically without exacerbating the overall paleness. And yes, it is possible.

A plankton extract we use at abtira in our Herbal Elixir does exactly that!

An extract of Dicrateria Rotunda, a microalgae, does not change tyrosinase activity in melanocytes and thus preserves the natural skin tone. On the other hand, it evens the skin tone and reduces dark spots thanks to its smart melanin production modulation – it is only active when melonogenesis is already activated.

Overall Herbal Elixir works as follows:
- It selectively reduces melanogenesis
- It reduces melanin transfer into keratinocytes under melanogenesis
- It reduces melanocyte proliferation under melanogenesis

As a result, Herbal Elixir reduces age spots and evens the skin tone, while preserving the skin’s natural color, making it a perfect ally during menopause

Skin in menopause - Hyperpigmentation

We continue our exploration of the skin in menopause. We are still at the epidermis level and have moved from transepidermal water loss to hyperpigmentation. Two best ways to tackle hyperpigmentation is by targeting melanogenesis directly (e.g. with plankton extracts) or increasing the cellular turnover. Next to AHA, retinoids are the best ingredient for increasing cellular turnover….
