Recommendations for protein intake have slowly been adjusted in the last few years, as our understanding of changing requirements in older persons has developed.

Older persons (above 65) need more protein in order to:
💡...overcome anabolic resistance to muscle tissue synthesis
💡...avoid age-related sarcopenia (the loss of muscle mass and function leading to reduced functional independence)
💡...maintain hormonal balance and prevent disease through the maintenance of a desirable body composition
💡...maintain a higher basal metabolic rate (calorie expenditure at rest)

We all know that is a , but not all of us know why. Here’s some of the reasons why including avocado in your diet will be of benefit to most of us.

As well as containing a very low amount of simple carbohydrates (sugars), of which almost none are glucose, the carbohydrates it does contain possess some very important health benefits. Avocados also contain a healthy amount of fibre and some very special fat soluble , and , and a valuable array of phytonutrients which boast significant anti carcinogenic ( ), , and antimicrobial properties.

For those super of us who like to be super informed, whilst avocado does contain a higher degree of omega-6, the ratio of omega-3 to 6 constitutes a desirable ratio of these polyunsaturated fatty acids. However, the ratio contained cannot make up for consuming a diet which is otherwise very high in omega-6.

According to the latest diet and nutrition surveys, (B2) is one of if not the most prevalent deficiency in modern industrialised countries such as the UK, with up to 96% of the test population being affected. This is explained largely by the fact that B2 is easily destroyed by exposure to light (UV) and through food processing (e.g. cooking) and through wide-spread changes in dietary preferences... such as the preference of breast, which has a very low micronutrient (vitamin and mineral) content, to reduce calorie and fat intake.
